I've been wanting to OC my PC, but I get regular crashes when I overclock it even a little bit. I first wanted to test if I just needed a new PSU. Thankfully, my roommate had an extra around that was more powerful than mine. So, I decided to test it out.
I hooked everything up like I needed to. My motherboard has an 8-pin jack by the CPU, but the PSU only had a 4-pin available. I've read that since I'm only running an Athlon II 240, only using the 4-pin should have been fine.
So, I hooked everything up. The PSU is a Thermaltake TR2 RX 550w (modular). I was unsure if the modular "ports" corresponded to specific parts, as nothing was labeled (except PCI-E). Turned on the computer...nothing. It turned on for a split second and then turned off.
I started hooking up the basics...Just the motherboard and video card. It boots up then. Then I try the fans. It boots up. Then the hard drive. It boots up. However, I noticed that I had forgotten to plug the HDD into the motherboard itself, as I had previously disconnected it to see if that changed anything.
After hooking up the HDD, it doesn't boot. I try switching around the cables plugged into the modular ports. No luck.
So, I through my original PSU back in there and hook everything up exactly like it was before. Now my hard drive is not detected. It doesn't seem to turn on either (can't hear or feel it). I try a different HDD (same cables, hooked up the same way). It's detected without problems.
What happened? I'm assuming the hard drive was short circuited...but how? I made sure to get rid of any static charges I might have. I made sure the power was completely off before changing anything around.
I'd like to eventually replace my PSU, but I'm afraid something like this will happen again...
