hard drive fail? bad cable? wd fal 1gb black

So yesterday tried coping some files to the drive and it said Partion not mounted or something like that and wouldnt work, it also wouldnt let me play any files from the hard drive, when i went to check disc it, it seemed to freeze on stage 4 of 5.

Swapped 4 diff sata cables it seemed to stick same spot of check disc (maybe i didnt wait long enough? waited like 15 mins it seemed with the hd silent ) , copied files off it and what do you know it ran check disc fine. Smart checks good, 33C temp, running western digital extended test since the quick test passed fine, I do see lots of these in the event log from yesterday around that time.


The device, \Device\Harddisk0\DR0, is not ready for access yet.

I guess im planning on RMA anyway but was it possibly bad cable? i also upped the volts for south and north bridge for fun since the problem (everything was/ is stock settings)

run HDDScan, and switch to "map view"


it will give you a much clearer picture of what the surface looks like.



You can also use MHDD, which you need to put on a boot disk because it runs in the DOS environment.


Make sure that the drive is not your boot drive when you runs scans on it.

well hddscan doesnt do anything, it shows 4 unidentified drives and has surface scan option but it finishes in 1 second and there is no map view options ;/ i guess ill check out mhdd

btw just passed the western digital extended test with the diagnostic tools so wonder if it was bad cable or really is bad drive, (i hate computer problems)
