Hard Drive Inspector software saying my Seagate drive is in danger.

Dear Friends,
I have bought a Seagate hard drive 12 days ago. I have downloaded a software named Hard Drive Inspector today. After installing and running that software that is saying my seagate drive is in danger. It is also saying that drive will be dead on 31st may, 2006. Here are some screenshots for your review.

What should I do now? Is that software trust worthy? Should I return my drive? Or, should I wait?

Please help me.

Thanks and best regards.

best thing to do is run their diag software . get it here then you should know if the drive is dead

Start backing up. I assume you have a 7200.8. Looks bad. THose drives are quite unreliable.

But your SMART details look like mine. THe numbers compare quite well. Maybe mine is about to die =(

Why are you running diagnostic software on your drive ?

Are you having problems with it ?

Where did you get the diagnostic software you are running ?

If it is not from Seagate, I would be HIGHLY suspicious of it's diagnosis.

Get the Seagate Tools diagnostic software directly from the Seagate site and then see if you really have any problems.

I disagree with one of the earlier comments. Seagate is the best drive made, IMO.

Good luck.

Ok, I don't know if any of you are understanding, but this is SMART tools. IT doesn't matter WHAT program you use, it just has to be able to read SMART info from the drive. Whether you use speedfan or drive inspector, you will get the same numbers.

SMART is the one that predicts failure, not the program.

Honestly, I'm kinda disappointed in all your responses and telling him to get a diagnostic run. He basically should be backing everything up. This is like hearing a click of death. You don't wait, you bakc it up, then you test your drive out.

Edit: And no, Seagates aren't king. They once were. 7200.7s were damn reliable, but not 7200.8s. If you want to dispute this, don't tell me your 7200.8 is still running, look at the pool on StorageReview..

Turn SMART off. Better off without it.

Any company can have some bad drive/products every once in a while.

I will still take Seagate's history of reliable drive production over any other company.

Thanks.

I think the OP should start doing backups at least. Couldn't hurt.

Wait 'til the drive dies after you'd done backups and order a replacement then.

1. Back up data <- most important step
2. download seagates diag software to see if they consider it as failing
3. if seagate's diag says its bad, get an RMA. If it doesn't, keep using the drive, but backup often and keep an eye on it.

Turning SMART off won't fix anything btw

I am little bit of Lucky as in that drive there is nothing that much important. There are only a few games .... I have all of those games DVD. I am waiting for that drive to die so that I can get a new fresh drive.

Looks like you're all set then, though if you can get Seagate's diagnostic tool to show the drive as failing (as Sparky suggested), you can go ahead and RMA it now.

Well, I have just finished checking my disk by Seagate's Seatools. After 2 hours of testing that shows me a error. That couldn't scan my drives. I got a message which was saying some kinda metadata file error.

By the way, my drive isn't barracuda 7200.8 .... its actually barracuda 7200.7

I think I should return my hard drive tomorrow.

The SMART parameters look very odd, many of the values are 100. Can you dl hdtune and display the health section.

My SMART values look like his. i have a 7200.8. I've used HD Inspector as well as SpeedFan which all have SMART tools.

And please stop praising Seagates until you actually realize how bad 7200.8s are.

Thier primary engineering team is behind the 7200.7s, the Momentus 5400.3s, and the 7200.10s. The 7200.8s and .9s were new engineers cutting thier teeth, so to speak. Seagate put desktop drives on the back burner to concentrate on PMR. Barracuda 8 and 9 is the result of prioritization. They do have a fiduciary duty to shareholders you know.

Has the cable you're using been bent to any extreme? Did a different cable provide different results? Are thier any unstable voltages from the PSU?

That I cannot tell yet except based on people on forums telling you drives fail. But thats the worst way to get reliability. There will always be the guy who tells you he had 28 Maxtors fail and 0 Seagates, and the other guy who tells you he got his 7200.8 RMAed 8 times.

Thus you never know. I'm waiting for StorageReview's reliability survey to show the 7200.9 and 7200.10 before I make judgements. I thinkt he 7200.9 is essentially a 7200.8. only a few models were tweaked with 160 GB platters. The rest remained the same. Maybe just some tweaks...

Well, so it wasn't the famed faulty .8 drive after all !!!

Yes, call Seagate and tell them the results of your Seatools run and I don't think you will have any problems at all in getting a prompt replacement (this might not have been the case if the drive was some brand other than Seagate).

Stick with Seagate.

Good computing.

Purchased a couple of 7200.7 160 GB drives last October. One of them installed as a data drive failed last month. On my test bench using UBCD, I was able to get most data off it. Ran Seatools which failed on the file structure test - RMAd to Seagate using online rma process and received a replacement today. It turns out to be a "certified repaired drive" although not the one I had sent. Oh Oh - being very skeptical, I ran a full test on it to make sure and although I did put back the data on it - I am going to monitor it carefully never quite confident if this one will die just as suddenly.

The five year warranty thing has made us all very respectful of Seagate when all it promises is a replacement of some kind - when vital data is lost it, and hours spent trying to recover some of it - it is very comforting to know that at least the drive replacement (original cost 80$) is free. No wonder Seagate now offers data recovery services as well. Sure - make products of indifferent quality, replace them with "repaired" drives of the same quality, and grandly offer your customer recovery serivices for a fee, of course. Revenue generation all the way - Way to go Seagate. Barracuda is the brand name - once it bites it never lets go.

Looking over my dead parts bin at work, I see quite a bunch of Seagates, much less than the Maxtors of course, but certainly far more than the Corsairs and Caviars.

Well, I just don't know what to say. Hard Drive Inspector is saying that my 7200.7 (which I got only 2 days ago) is also in danger and that will be dead after 3 days. I just want to say what happens after 3 days.
