I just got the Maxtor 300GB PATA drive today and was trying to install it. I have set the jumpers to slave and used the black color ribbon to the drive and the blue color to the motherboard IDE slot. However, it is not being recognized. I have tried several different configurations, but no luck. I'm thinking it may be a bad cable, but probably not. I'll try again tomorrow with another IDE cable. Any other suggestions?

Not being recognised by the OS or in the BIOS?

OS... Running service pack 2? Partitioned ? Formatted ?

BIOS ... Bad ribbon cable ? Remove jumper, Use Cable Select.

Definitely try another IDE cable. I had at least 3 faulty IDE cables. Once I even RMAed a HD and finally I tried a new IDE cable and that solved all the problems. Gosh, I felt like a total idiot that time.

Hi, Color coded connectors means Cable Select Cable. Most will also work as Master/Slave. Some don't. Try setting the Drive (or both if two) to CS. Black will be Master and Grey will be slave if you add a second drive. Good Luck, Jim

It is not being detected in the BIOS or the OS. When I go to the standard CMOS to auto detect the IDE drive, nothing comes up.

Thanks guys, I'm about to get another cable right now. Will post soon.

Tried another cable, but still doesn't work. If I remove the jumper, it doesn't work. If I leave the jumper on to the Cable Select position, it still doesn't detect in the BIOS. Yes, the power cable is plugged in. Maybe I should just return this to Outpost and get myself a SATA drive instead. But I'll try further. Thanks again.

Sometimes if you have a WD drive already in your system they don't play well with others. If you are trying this on the WD computer try setting the WD to CS first.

does your mobo have both SATA and PATA hard drives? I know I had to play with the settings on an MSI MoBo the other day to get it to accept both. It was a 865PE Neo3 my buddy had. I can't remember exactly what it was i set it too but if this be the case for you (you are using both) I will look it up for ya. Let me know.

One other thing. Is the drive by itself on the IDE channel? If so, almost always set the drive to cable select. WD drives I know for sure do.

The drive will be secondary. My first drive is a Western Digital SATA 250GB. This Maxtor PATA will be the slave. I've tried it as cable select with the jumper on, still doesn't detect. Tried it as slave, no work either. The drive is running though. I don't think it is dead. Out of ideas at this moment.

It is the only one on the IDE2, on IDE1 there is the Dvd and dvd+rw drives.

The WD is SATA so I don't think I can set them to CS. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Set the PATA drive as PRIMARY MASTER. Reboot and check for proper detection. Also set the jumper to MASTER or CABLE SELECT.

This is a long shot, but have you tried putting Hard drives to IDE1 and opticals to IDE2? Most boards recommend HDDs on IDE1 and other stuff on IDE2. It should work the way you have it, but then again, lots of other things SHOULD work too. I had a similar experience with my current WD IDE HDD when I thought I set the jumper to master. Have you quintuple checked WD's jumper layout? If I recall correctly, they have two different slave settings and two different primary's based on something.

Ok, I will do this. I have set it to Cable Select before with different cables, but no work.

Good idea. I will try this too. I'm at the stage where if it doesn't work after these steps, I'll just send it back and hope for a full refund. I wanted a SATA drive in the first place due to the thinner cables and ease of use. But I still want this drive to work. Thanks again.

Put the Maxtor on it's own IDE channel and set the jumper to Master, if that doesn't work and you've already tried another cable that you know works RMA it.

Well it finally works now! I tried another power cord and it showed up just fine. Feel like a total idiot right now. Went through all that and a simple plug in would have fixed things. Well, now time to copy files and put that big drive to use for some ... educational purposes ...

I want to thank you all for your time.

One more question, if I want to move large folders individually, not the whole drive, what should I do? I'm dragging it to the drive but that takes forever.
