Are there any ill effects of having the hard drive mounted upside down in the case? is there a correct orientation for the hard drive? basically for easier ide cabling.
Thanks,

Some people say yes - I say no. Mount the thing however it fits. I've done it a few times, and haven't had any problems so far.

I would always have the drive the right way up. This is the best dynamic for the platter and the heads, it is very important that the heads do not contact the platter surface (when the platters are rotating).
Even when the drive is on the side there will be difference in the speed fo the platters on the up side as on the down side. These may be small, but timing is everything!!!
As for the drive being upsidedown NO, this is not the way the head are desingened to opperate.

Semimaker, most HD heads are auto-calibrating. The ones that don't, don't need calibrating.

Mount it any way u want. as long as its firmly in place.

yeah, try to mount it in place, that is it cannot move... ;-)

unfortunately with it "upside down" the circuit board is exposed. dust exists inside the case. then the circuit board will get covered with dust. dust is an insulator. the components of that circuit board need to stay cool (even though there is no actual heatsink on them).

I don't think so. Hard drive platters are extremely light weight and extremely well balanced. I think the difference in the Earth's gravitational field from one side of the drive to the other is a bigger concern. ;

You shouldn't have any problems. I have a Compaq 486 sitting here from 1994 that has the hard drive mounted upside down from the factory. I replaced it with a bigger drive (still mounted upside down). It's had no problems.
