First my hardware,
Athlon XP 2400+ (running at 1800+ because of bios autodetect and I'm too lazy to fix it)
1024MB Ram
Windows 2K w/ Sp4
Samsung 160gig hard drive ATA100
ASUS 7V880 Motherboard

Okay, here's what's going on. I have my 160gb hard drive partitioned into a 20gig hard drive for windows 2000 + all my software and I have a 140gig partition for video files, picture files, ect. I've been lately having this problem, I'll just be sitting here using my computer and it will reboot and it will display a message that a disk read error press ctrl-alt-delete to reboot (a bios message).
I have tried booting into windows pe, and it cannot mount the partition, but I am able to rescue files off of it using a system commander utility. I have tried using Avast disk checker and chkdsk, but those don't work since it can't mount the partition I want to check. Since that failed, I tried loading partition magic and it said the partition tables and everything was fine, which really confused me. So the next thing I did was I booted up with the Windows 2k cd and went into the repair console and issued fixmbr and fixboot and those completed successfully, but it still wouldn't boot off the disk.
I have tried both Windows 2000 and Windows Xp so I have problem blaming it on the operating system, although I wish I could blame it on Microsoft (sorry I had to get that little dig in there). I also have problems blaming it on the hard drive because the second partition, which has much more disk activity then the first partition is always fine after each crash. The only thing that is saving me is my ghost image so I can restore my windows pretty quickly (and yes, I have tried installing from scratch, so it isn't my ghost image).
Any thoughts? I would really hate for it to be a hard drive problem, but let me know what you guys think.
