Hard Drive prices suck!

Hard drives are the only thing that don't seem to drop in price... a year ago I paid $130 for an XP2500, now they're $80. A year ago I bought my brother an 80 GB hard drive for $90... now they're $80... WTF???

I disagree. Two years ago, I bought a 40GB for $100. Plus, if you shop around, you can get that 80 GB for less.

hot deals is the way to go. i just got my maxtor 160 gb HDD (8mb cache) from OD for $70, no rebates

HD prices are ridiculously good these days. Going rate @ a B&M is $0.50/Gig after rebate for a 7200 RPM 8 Meg cache drive.

No, $150 for a 200GB drive with no rebates? Look at the prices of those a year ago. The lowend isn't going to drop much because there isn't any room to drop.

Did you contact them? Only once have I had a problem getting a rebate from WD. After it was late I contacted them, and they sent me a new check in a week.

Yep, the Raptors dropped in price considerably within the first year. I picked up two of them for under $250.

Did you contact them? Only once have I had a problem getting a rebate from WD. After it was late I contacted them, and they sent me a new check in a week.

I have... and they said they have no record of it.
Not too long ago I bought a WD1600LB with a $40 rebate, didn't get the rebate check for a while... then all of a sudden I got two notices saying I don't get the rebate because I submitted two forms... so I called about that and was told that they would send the check for one of them, but not both, which I agreed to because I only submitted one... that was about 3 months ago, still no check.

Well sure I can find a different model 80 GB now for less than I paid for my WD800JB a year ago... but I could have bought a crappy Maxtor back when I bought the WD800JB and paid less too. The point is not what model I'm referring to specifically, but that the price has only dropped 12% in a year or more.

I am always careful to send out rebate stuff filled out properly. I scan and and save docs for proof just in case. I always get my rebates bask. In fact, I got a $40 rebate from WD today for an 80 gig drive that was $50 after rebate. I sent out a $40 rebate today for a 74Gig Raptor, and a $30 rebate for Adobe Photoshop Elements and Album. Got a $50 rebate back this week for an IPAQ too. Sometimes you gotta do the rebate thing to get the deals.

I posted a link for a WD800JB currently for sale for $72. It is an OEM drive, but still comes with a 3 year warrantee.

The thing is it's all about shopping around. For example, I also found the same drive here retail for $109...

Obviously, you don't check Anandtech Hot Deals often... You've been able to pick up Western Digital 120GB Special Edition drives for the last year for $59-$69 after rebate nearly any given week. If you had been awake this weekend, you could have scored a 160GB 1600JB drive for $19.99 after rebate. Jesus, it was even on the Circuit City shelf tag. No wheeling and dealing what-so-ever so you can't complain!

Yes, now I scan all my rebates before I send them in... cheap insurance.

The ONLY way to get hard drives cheap is with rebates... and rebates can be a hassle, which I guess is the price you pay to get a good price on a hard drive.
And you're right, I don't spend much time in the Hot Deals forum because most of the stuff I see is "go to office max, price match to Fry's, then go to Best Buy and price match at Office Max since Best Buy won't price match on stores out of state, then you get a Best Buy mail in rebate and a Western Digital mail in rebate and viola!" lol

I think that next month I'm gonna get one of these, which has 4x the storage capacity, 4x the cache, and costs $12 more than the 40GB Maxtor that I bought about 15 months ago. How's that for not coming down in price?

Heh. I draw the line there too. I dont do the pricematch thing. I'll do the rebate and a coupon code, but that is it. I buy all HD and optical drives @ B&M since prices are better after rebate than online. $0.50/Gig is pretty standard week in week out.

Drives are cheap. I have a $500 Maxtor 300 Mb paperweight. Be careful with the sale drives. If you get a WD 8Mb drive, get the Special Edition with the 3-year warrantee. R

Just bought a Seagate Ultra-quiet 80gb 7200rpm drive for $60 after rebate... And I got it from the first store that I went to (wasn't even looking for a hot deal.)

Sorry Jeff, I'm going to have to disagree. I find the prices are very reasonable for hard drives these days. Even without a hotdeals type of deal they are pretty cheap and worth the money.
