Hard Drive problem

I finished building a PC and the Western Digital 80GB Special Edition Hard drive stop the BIOS to be accessed from the POST. I couldn't setup the BIOS at all, but after removing it, the BIOS worked (not like it does any good, I still can't install MS Windows XP cause I have no hard drive). Does anyone know why a hard drive would cause such problem? Is it a defect or something else? i'm sure it's not the cable that causes this.

Check the jumpers again. Make sure it is set to master. Make sure you have the IDE cable plugged in fully and correctly, going back to your IDE0 or IDE1 or whatever is the first channel. Make sure you have the the power connector plugged in fully and that it is not a "fan only" one or one that piggy-backs off another connector that is plugged into a different device.

If it still doesnt work, try a different cable. Try IDE2. Try "cable select" jumper.

sounds like jumpers to me too - if you have something else on the same channel the jumper settings for that have to be right as well - like if you have a cdrom set to slave, you can't have the hard drive set to cable select on the same channel

If it is the only drive on that cable, then take off every jumper. WD drives dont need jumpers if they are single.

Aslo too if it is a single wester digital drive, there is a differnet jumber config other than the master/slave you can see it Here - Jumper Settings in figure 1
