I bought a brand new hard drive about 3 weeks ago, and i'm wondering, it's now making a loud clicking noise. When ever the hard drive is accessing, doesn't matter if it's reading or writing, after a while, it will just make a click noise. it's not continuiously clicking, but just clicks. It's distinct because it's louder than normal hard drive operation noise. Is this suppose to be normal?

The hard drive in question is Maxtor 6Y080M0 which is a SATA interface. I cannot run the Maxtor Powermax (i believe that is what it is called) since i use a onboard SATA from my motherboard. Will they take this warranty this drive even though i haven't run the Powermax?

Right now, the drive still works, but i'm afraid that one day the drive will just stop working just like that, and forcing me to have to re-install windows.

I have made an recording of the sound so you will know what it sounds like.
Hard Drive click recording

Bear this doesn't happen constantly, it just happens every so often and only when it is drive is active. The mp3 is only 10 seconds, but the whole check disk process was about 2minutes, and it did find some security descriptor (or whatever you call it). I know the recording is noisy, since there is a fan in front of the hard drives (pural, because i have more than one HDD, but master is the one in question not my secondary drive which is older). Hopefully this mp3 helps you in answer my question. The hard drive that is having trouble is the Maxtor 6Y080M0.

i honeslty couldnt get anythign from that mp3 but when this happens, does your system hang.. and when it clicks, is it at a constant beat or does it vary... if your comp hangs and its at a constant rate and its relatively loud, as if you were lightly tapping a pen on a desk...then that could be the 'click of death', which means your drive could be going soon.... from what i know maxtor is good with warranty returns, just gay about how you ship them the drive, keep that in mind.. i had an MSI 6380E mobo and 2 of the hard drives (a WD and a maxtor) just started f'ing up after a few months, im guessing the onboard IDE controller had something to do with it, regardless, the drive got replaced.. so what i would do is just see if its returnable, if its the click of death that is..
