Hard drive problem

Ok I have an old hard drive from my brothers job its got windows 95 on it. It won't boot at all I've tried it in my computer and it gets to the Windows 95 screen and keeps on rebooting. The problem is I need to get the data that is there. So I set the jumpers to slave and set it up on my computer. When I boot my computer it still wants to boot from the old drive not my Win XP drive. Any idea why? And how to fix. Thanks in advance.

more info..like What manufacturer of the old drive? what position on your IDE cable? sure its set as Slave(or CableSelect..) and what is the XP hd set as and its position on the IDE cable..?

The hard drive is a seagate 2gigs Position Ide 1 The hard drive shows no jumpers is slave.Windows XP is IDE 1 too. My cd roms are on IDE 2. Thanks

the IDE cable position for the 2 hds..one end is on the IDE controller for the mobo end ..the other end(with 2 connectors..) the furthest away is the Master position(some mobos..usually older vary from this..) the next closest to the mobo end is the Slave
