Hard Drive Repair

Is there actually such a thing? I lost almost all my drives to a power supply issue the other day (3 drives on one cable). The platter drive isnt even trying to spin up and none of them register in bios anymore. It sounds like swapping pcb is not so useful these days but I saw one thread on a different board that was talking about a diode placed on the pcb's that burns out with electrical surges to protect the rest of the circuitry and can often be replaced or bypassed to make the drive function again. The thread was from 2012 though and I am having a hard time finding anything newer.

Does anyone here have good ideas on what I could try out or know where to get some good info? I would guess that data recovery places should know but wanted to see if there is anything I can do myself. The platter drive is just a 2GB segate and the one I care about the least, the other two drives I lost were two 840evo's, one a 500GB, the other 1TB.

You seen any burn marks on the PCBs of the HDs?
If so, possible a PCB swap will work, but you need the exact same PCB right down to the revision & date. Otherwise, it can screw things up royally.

What PSU was this anyway?

Are they going to replace all your stuff?

I've done PCB swaps before with some limited success on drives that wouldn't spin up or had connection issues. There are also companies that will rescue data off drives, but the costs are way too high for normal people with normal data. Generally, if the data is irreplaceable but you don't have the cash to pay for a rescue...look online for an exact match and do the swap. otherwise, just throw it out.

I pulled the PCB off the platter drive to have a look at it, I couldnt see any burn marks. I ended up taking them to a data recovery place as they told me they will have a look at them to see if they can repair the SSD's which sounds like it will significantly cheaper than replacement if its fixable. I dont have access to any micro soldering equipment and after looking the PCB's it looks like a must, so I cant really experiment around with them myself.

The power suppply I was using was an antec signature 850, but I dont know in what order things went bad for the PC. Originally the PC just shut down, I thought maybe something had overheated, let it sit for a while and tried to turn in back on, I could see a white flash happened somewhere in the case when I did, but no idea where. I replaced the power supply at that point and when I tried to turn in back on (I had the case open at this point) I saw a vrm on the video card explode. The HD's may have taken the damage at that time too since when I originally swapped power supplies I kept the antec cable for those HD's because of how it was routed in the case. The board wouldnt post with the HD's plugged in when using that configuration so that was probably a bad move.

Never reuse cables from one PSU with another unit. They are not standard, and can be wired differently resulting in damage.
