Hard Drive Temps - what are yours reading?

I have cooling issues with my case. . Due to the cramped internal 3.5" drive cages, I can only fit 2 drives in each cage (meant for 3), and even then only one of those drives can have a HDD cooler. The other has to be turned upside down to mooch off of the circulation of it's mate's cooler.

Despite all that, I'm still getting temps in the mid-high 40s during modest load (especially on the pair that don't have an intake fan to help).. around 40-41 when idle. What do you guys see your drives running at, as measured by SMART sensor?

Hmm, the 3 HDDs that I have under SMART monitoring shows temps in the 30s, and I'm in Sunny Singapore. A hot HDD is a bad thing, though I'm not sure if 40-41 is considered hot.

Thanks for posting this. The 120mm fan in the front of my Sonata died last week and I hadn't replaced it yet. My HD temps with 3 7200RPM drives stacked on top of each other had risen to 45-47C! Removing the case side cover got the temps to drop to around 40C. Replacing the 120mm fan and putting the side cover back on dropped my HD temps to 35-38C (the 38C in the in the middle of the other two HDs). So just adding a fan dropped my HD temps by 10C!

PS: As reported by my motherboard, my case temp is 22C and idle CPU core temp is 23C (Cool 'n Quiet ftw).

I have an Antec 1050B case, about 21 inches high. I have two HDDs in a single cage, one at the top of the cage and one at the bottom. The bottom one is the bootable drive and typically runs at 30 - 33 C. The other drive at the top runs cooler at 28 - 30 C. These are typical idle temperatures, and the variation is directly related to room temperature. Neither heat up by more than a couple degrees when doing real work. Other than the PSU fan, there is only one rear 120 mm case fan running on low speed. There are two side vents. I removed the front filter which helps air flow a bit. I can feel the difference in air flow with it removed.

Tam running 4 HDDs in a Thermaltake tower sitting on the floor. There are 2 SATA drives in a RAID 1 config for data, and the system drive is a 120 GB Seagate PATA. There is an inactive duplicate PATA drive in the same cage, but not powered. I have no drive coolers other than normal case fans.

Indicated temp of the system PATA drive is 31C.

All cage slots are filled.

Hi All
As long as we agree a Harddrive is a Harddrive, the reports on the Harddrives in DIRECTV'S DVRS, has shown that 52 to 54 deg C is common. These drives are 160 meg 7200 RPM and run 24/7 until they fail.
Normal life has been 4 to 5 years. The temperature info in the DVRS setup menu is taken from the temp. sensor built into the Harddrive. Seagate is the most common drive.

I have two SATA Samsung (160gb and 300gb) that sit directly behind a 120mm fan that both typically run at about 30-33c. I also have a PATA Western Digital 200gb that sits in a 5.25 cage with no fan and it runs about 6 or 7 degrees warmer. Everything I've seen and heard says that HDDs can be safely run at 50 degrees or so before you should see any real reduction in HDD lifespan or performance.

2x80mm fans, 3 HDD's running 35/32/34 at idle. 4th hard drive with no SMART support.
No idea about CPU/room temps.

OP, I use an Antec full tower that is setup much like yours (except for 1 less drive cage); by using the rear two screw holes on the cage for my drives, I was able to stick an 80mm fan in front to blow over the drives. They're two SCSI drives and during use they've never gotten above 25C. Yes, the drives will hang out and may cause some accessability problems, but it's worth it (for me) to keep the drives cool.

Most hard drives, enterprise and consumer class, have maximum "safe" temp. limit of 55C.

Mine's running at 25C right now, but that's because it's FREEZING outside right now. During the summer, it gets up to about 45C when it's being heavily used. That's with a 5volted 80mm fan blowing on it.

Samsung Spinpoint 250 GB PATA, with Coolermaster 80mm fan in front inside a Coolermaster Centurion 5 case. I can have 27'Celsius even in the summer. Go figure.

Maxtor 250G 16MB Cache PATA - it's at 28 right now. Can go up to about 37 during the summer. I have a couple of older Maxtors in another PC (80G's) that normally run in the low 40's - for years.

7200.8 Seagate 250Gb == 30C
5400 Quantum Fireball (maxtor) 60Gb == 30C

Room ambient == 20C
<folding in background though, 144 Opteron CPU at 100% usage, 36C>

Thanks. Yeah I had that setup going - an 80mm fan stuffed in one of the cages, making the drives stick out over the mobo -- but I replaced it with a HDD cooler. That really hasn't helped - I get more direct circulation now but warm air from it's mate offsets the active cooling. So I think I might try the HDD cooler AND an 80mm fan. I'm also windering if the 80mm vent fan up top might be inadequate and I need to grab a 120mm rear vent fan.

Thanks for all the replies. I knew 55C was the high end of the operating threshold, but was just wondering if I was running normal or high. It's good to see where everyone else is. If I can shave a few degrees off with another fan I think I'll be happy.

High 20s idle, up to 40 if I'm using them a ton. Antec minitower with an intake fan blowing over them and an exhaust fan under the dual-fan psu. I'm a very firm believer in keeping hard drives cool, had too many fail when I used to not care.
