Here's another (ripped from GA):
OfficeDepot - Maxtor 160GB 7200RPM UltraATA133 8MB Buffer Hard Drive for $89.84 after Rebate with FREE Delivery
A very good hard drive (I have one in my ReplayTV). It`s a large 160GB 7200RPM UltraATA/133 one with a big 8mb buffer. There`s actually 2 rebates on this model, which bring the price down to $89.84 delivered!

Too many choices.

I have a 160 gb maxtor I'm looking at putting in a raid.

Undecided if I should get a 200GB and leave 40gb to play with.

If using software raid is keeping the hard drives identicle important?

If I use hardware based raid can I use different size hard drives?

GREAT POST. THANKS

thanks! i got in on the CompUSA 120gb deal. assuming my rebate comes in, it'll be under $70 after tax for a 120gb 7200rpm 8mb cache drive. nice...

trikster2: if you are going to use any kind of RAID, use 2 identical HDDs. it will save you a lot of headaches.

AWESOME post! Thanks!

I've been reading that it's now hard to find a drive w/ a 3 year warranty, but it's worth noting that Maxtor 120GB from NewEgg has a 3 year warranty on it.

I just got a job in a Final Cut Pro/DV Lab, so I hadta beef up my storage for take home projects!

trikster2, in my experience, using identical drives is unnecessary. Getting 2 drives that are identical in size is essentially impossible, anyway. The high-level formatting by the manufacturer will leave even 2 drives of the same model as slightly different sizes.

It does make sense, though, to buy identical drives, as you will be bottlenecked by the slower of the two.

Officemax has a 120GB Western Digital that you can get down to about $50 -- after rebate, a $30/$150 online coupon, and a couple of FAR items to get over the $150 mark.

Nice. Keep up the good work.
Not to be evil or complain, but if you have the time could you note which ones are invalid.
Like the 120GB Western Digital and 120GB Seagate that are no longer working.

Minor changes ...
a) Expired rebates are now removed when the expire ... (previously, they were in italics for a week ...)
b) Sorted by date ...
c) OOS items indicated as and when i'm told about them ... (I won't remove OOS from the list, because you never know ...)
d) I'm not going to provide $/gb ... use a calculator - although, it shouldn't be TOO difficult :-D

I didn't find any FAR items at Officemax (maybe I just didn't try hard enough).
So I added the Khypermedia 50 CD-R ($14-$12MIR) and Cyber Acoustic speakers ($10-$9MIR). Total of $3 more to get $10 discount, which yields $53 for the HD. Plus tax and stamps it's about $65.

EDIT: Somebody else found some FAR items: $10-10 rebate universal remotes (20658245, 20191196). So it's $50 for the HD only, plus tax will be about $61.50.

Well, that would be nice, except it tells me to return it back to the OEM dealer. WTF once more.

I wanting to take advantage of the $58.99 WD 120GB 8meg at fry's

I see the coupon, and I see the drive at Fry's Outpost, but the price is $139.99 (-50MIR is sill $90)

is the $108.99 only at their stores?

Can anyone confirm this?

I'm hoping I've missed something on their website, cuz it's a long way to california from alabama...

also Pezman, is that coupon you posted for Fry's only?

StraightPipe, I believe so, the Fry's price and the Outpost price are not compatible.
However, I've noticed that Outpost is usually about a week later in changing their prices so, keep your eyes peeled...

Good luck.
P.S. the Fry's deal expires on Tuesday October 21st

Beware of Outpost.. maxtor denied my claim for $50... with a valid cut out UPC code from the box itself and also with the official outpost receipt. They said it was not valid....many companies now are hungry and will post rebates sometimes to get attention or maybe the webmaster forgot to update the page when I got it [it expired].. just be wary of outpost.... they are good but mistakes do happen.

Are you sure you typed in the full model number on the box? It ends in "RK" which identifies it as retail. Not sure why they can't determine by serial number, but when I typed in the model number this way, it went from being OEM to retail box.
