Hard Drive Transfer from one computer to another computer

I have an old computer Pentium 150 Hz with windows 98. I would like to transfer its secondary hard drive (5 GB) to another computer (Windows 98). I am wondering if I would be able to access the files on this hard drive when I install the hard drive to second computer.

I Computer is generic brand. II Computer is Emachines Celeron 43 Mhz.

When I installed this hard drive to second computer as secondary slave, it auto-detects in BIOS, but it does not show when Windows start up. Is it any way to access this hard drive and its contents? I would not want to reformat it.

Thanks

You could access the other computer's harddrive through a network LAN system if you have that setup. If you don't then the best bet would be to take the drive from the older computer and put it in as a secondary and transfer everything over. When thats done - go put the drive back in the original computer and you're set.

If you have already hooked it up to the second computer then you should see if you can find it within the Device Manager. What version of windows are you running on the second computer? With Windows XP installed on my computer I had a secondary SATA drive that wasn't showing up until I found it on my device manager and played around with identifying it, drivers, and a program to allow it to be seen fully as the 300 gig drive that it is.

I hope I helped out.. ask more if I didn't get what you were saying.

You could try the opposite: put the eMachine disk into the generic computer and move the files to the eMachine disk drive, then put the drive back in the eMachine. Would that work?

Otherwise you could try making a DOS boot floppy, boot into DOS mode and transfer the files using the DOS commands, perhaps. Welcome to the Forums, I hope that helps with some ideas

sorry - its getting late, i misread some of your question as 'will it be a problem'

check the jumpers are configured correctly, should be though if it shows in bios.

What did you get in windows?
Bear in mind that it will be the D drive maybe, depending on how many other drives you have in there.

Does it show up in device manager?

I have Windows 98 on Second Computer.

When I installed this hard drive from I computer from II computer, I set the jumper as Slave, and installed it as secondary slave drive. II computer BIOS can detect it, but once Windows start, it does not find this hard drive. Although, when I run MaxBlast3 (Maxtor Software), it does find this hard drive.

Try unplugging the eMachine CD-ROM drive from its data cable, and plug the 5GB hard drive into that data cable instead. If that works, then look at the jumper on the CD-ROM drive and see if it is set to Cable Select instead of Master. If it is Cable Select, then set your 5GB drive to Cable Select also (if it will be on the same cable as the CD-ROM drive).

I find the secondary hard drive on device manager, but the button identifying drive letter is grayed. This Hard drive was originally partitioned in 3 partitions on previous computer. I tried to upgrade the driver, it returns the same driver. Any tips on how to access this drive from My Computer? I have assigned letter G to CD rom.
