Hello,

i recently replaced my laptop's hard disk with a WD Scorpio Black 750gb. Due to 7200 rpm i can feel a vibration while touching the laptop. I think that the disk works at full speed, even while I am browsing the internet.

Is there any program that can spin down the disk when it is not needed?

Sounds like you should have just gone SSD honestly...

Spinning a disk up and down repeatedly is not the greatest idea in the world. You're running the OS on it, this implies that it's always "needed" from one microsecond to the next.

Well, there is something you can try without spending money on an SSD yet:

Set the hard drive to spin down sooner, maybe after 10 minutes. Then, see how often it spins back up during your normal usage.

It can get annoying to wait for the drive to spin up when you, say, download something from the internet.

If the drive never spins down, then try deleting your page file, just as an experiment.

Besides the annoying delay, there's also a whole lot of people who insist this wears out the drive sooner than if it were simply spinning the whole time.

Of course nobody has ever done any scientific studies on this or anything, but its the conclusion myself and many others have reached after having their first generation WD Green drives die within 1.5-2 years, the first drives DESIGNED to do this every few seconds.

All I can say is that the latest WD Black model I got (WD1002FAEX) is indeed louder and vibrates more than all the WD Black predecessors (WD1001FALS) that I own.

You can use a small ssd as your main drive, and put the 2nd drive for storage in the cdrom bay.

Then you can use some tools to force spin down the 2nd drive when not needed.

My friend fixed his vibration issues on his laptop (Toshiba satellite) by doing this, but unsure how much space clearance you got. You simply put some thin rubber/silicon washers where it attaches to the laptop. Depending on the design, you may need new screws.

Any more details or pictures ?

how much memory is in this system ?
do you have a page/swap file on this drive ?

maybe tweaking those settings could reduce the hard drive spin ups

Another plus for the Lenovo HDD caddy's soft rubber rails. Could they be made to fit?

Nope, sorry. Didn't think to take any.
I suppose you can also use rubber-bands, but again, it all depends on how the HD mounts, and make sure you don't cover the air vents.

hmm, maybe use an old bicycle inner tube and cut some rubber shapes from it. Maybe some rectangles to wrap all the way around the edges like the picture above, or maybe just some simple washers to put between the drive and the cage where the screws would go through.
