There has been a lot of hoopla about ATI and their CrossFire master cards lately, and I figured I would drop my 2 cents about all of this. Let me start by saying that we checked today with one of the Nets largest online computer parts retailers and they explained to me that they did not anticipate having stock on ATI CrossFire Master cards till November. Now keep in mind this is a mere 5 to 6 (depending how you count) MONTHS after their initial introduction of the product back in May...of this year.

Instead of waxing on for pages, I am going to cut to the chase and say what everyone is thinking and what many of us in the technology press are feeling.

1. ATI, HardOCP is not your personal PR bitch, so don't treat us like one again. You're on thin ice and you should be ashamed of your actions this year. We at HardOCP don't want to be a mouthpiece for vaporware in order to keep your stock price up. So from now on, if it is not the real deal, just keep it to yourself.

2. Continue with the "If NVIDIA does it, we can do it too!" methodology that has been working for you guys for a while now. But from now on, keep a tighter timeline.

3. Repeat after me. Paper launches, NO. Product launches, YES.

4. NVIDIA is setting the new standard by having their card builders selling the products on the day that they are launched. Learn it, know it, live it. And NVIDIA, don't change up on us now.

The bottom line is that the enthusiast hardware community wants products, not Canuck promises. ATI is quickly burning through a solid and loyal fan base that they built back in the days of the 9700/9800. Now is the time for ATI to step up with honest damage control, not another half filled basket of half baked promises.

And oh yeah, Quake 4 just went Gold. WooHoo! I think I just found a reason to go ahead and go SLI. (Always been a big Quake fan...) Too bad CrossFire is not a real option, although I am unsure whether or not I would consider it at this time, just due to having a fear of lacking support and service by ATI.

Now why don't you get into my 'Nvidia blocky and awful shadows in Farcry' thread and explain that away...why EVERY nvidia card has a FAR lower IQ than their ATI counterparts (in Farcry), even with high quality set in the drivers?

Crossfire has been somwhat of a mess so far, and here's to hoping ATI can get their act together...which they not only will, but have to.

EDIT: and if r520 is a 7800GTX beater 9and we'll know tmrw, this is the subject you're going to be flogging the hardest isn't it?

I liked when they had sketchy benchmarks in a review, and people called them out on it, then they went on a ban spree and the majority of their fan base left. Look at the current posters in the hardforum; you won't find too many posters from 1999-2002 because of that. I don't even remember a public apology or anything; just a restructuring of their benchmarks (which I'll admit I do like). Yay for internet drama.

So many people disliking ATI these days.

Not like it matters for me since I don't want to buy any videocards from ATI or Nvidia that are more than $150 but this makes me want to stick with ATI since I feel sorry for them.

I don't have to "explain anything away"- pretty much everyone knows that stating EVERY nVidia card has FAR lower IQ" is ridiculous, and I can link you to dozens of reviews that say this. "Blocky shadows in FAR CRY" do not "every card, every game all worse" make. The statement is so far from reality I won't even go to the effort to dig up links. If you want to believe it, good for you.

"Having" to do something and "doing" something are very different things.

Errr, why? I'm more interested in the R520 personally. I think everyone else is as well. I posted this because it's timely news, and didn't have a thread yet.

2 things:

firstly, i pretty much agree with everything Kyle is saying but not the manner is which he says it
secondly, i would HOPE that 520 is faster, they have had a nice chunk of time over Nvidia to finetune, etc...

There have been several of those episodes over there. I was a victim once myself and it wasn't even over hardware...

bleh, the IQ comment was meant about farcry but came out wrong...although i understand from comments in the thread that the shadow bug affects a few other games too... Personally i think it's ridiculous that this awful IQ problem has been ignored for so long...and suspect that that if it were an ATI problem you'd have been all over it like a fly over a cow pat

And I wonder why the "wiener" ATi bunch (and they know who they are) would flame me 2 weeks ago when I talked about recent pattern by ATi to have paper launches, vapor launnches, and all and all not enough product, period....I was right and the wiener crowd was being the fanatics they always were...

I think they are a poorly ran company, but that being said I have said the same thing about AMD from time to time....

I don't think XFire was ever meant for the R480 (or earlies) series of cards from ATI. I think (I hope) we'll see some changes after Wednesday.

But, Kyle is right. Shame on ATI. But of course he has the right to deny ATI "paper" launches on his web site.

The message is definately right on but it's delivered in a very tactless manner. I would expect a bit more professionalism from someone who runs a respectable website. His use of "Canucks" in a derogatory fashion is in particular bad taste.

Everyone knows that ATI has had big problems this year and made some major mistakes. But to kick someone when they're down like this just seems uncalled for. Maybe someone didn't get their R520 review cards from ATI?
