i boot from floppy blah blah, then when it gets to the a:\ prompt i type in "setup.exe" and it goes through the scandisk type thing. i press ok, then as soon as it gets to the dos prompt again it says something like CD01 cant be found or something about not finding my cd drive. what could be the problem? it says it sees the drive in the beginning. please help me. i can do a install for win2k, but not 98se.

Boot off the CD for Win98SE ...very unlikely

try going to Bootdisk.com
and create a new bootdisk.

Also what brand is your CD-Rom?

First of all, standard procedure for installing Win9X is to copy the entire contents of the win9x directory on the CD to your Hard disk. You should always run setup from your hard disk.

Why is your CD-Rom acting up? It could just be old and tired, your disk could be dirty, the lense for the laser inside the CD-Rom drive could be dirty. The list goes on ...

This depends if you have the upgrade or full version, the upgrade will not boot off the CD only the full version.

Boot from the Win9x floppy disk. Select "start computer with cd-rom support"
Place the Win9X cd-rom in the CD drive (if you didn't put it ther already)

Format your hard disk and create a directory on c: to hold the install files. Use the MAKE DIRECTORY command

ex: a:\>md c:\wincab hit enter

At the a: prompt ( A:\> ) change to your cd rom drive by typning in the drive letter followed by a full colon
ex: a:\>d: hit enter

In win 98 all the files necessary to install are located in a dir called Win98. In Win ME it in a dir called Win9x
List the contents of the cd-rom by typing in dir

ex: d:\>dir hit enter

when you find the install directory change to it by using the CHANGE DIRECTORY command

ex: d:\>cd win9x hit enter

Copy the entire contents to the wincab directory on the C: drive using the copy command

ex: d:\win9x\>copy *.* c:\wincab hit enter

The * (shift+8) is a wild card character. The command copy *.* means copy all the files. Once it's finished change back to the c: drive

ex: d:\win9x\>c: hit enter

Now change to the wincab directory

ex: c:\>cd wincab

Now run setup

ex: c:\wincab\>setup hit enter

The install will go faster, cuz your hard disk is faster than any cd-rom and Windows will never again ask you to "Please insert the disk labled Win9X cd-Rom"

Thats right ! Copy the CD data into a directory and the install process goes MUCH MUCH faster and u don't need to load drivers for CD-rom in dos anymore.
Oh.. I remember the times I had so much fun configuring my cd-rom and sound card (irq's and dma channels !hehe) in dos ! GOod old times !

Thor !

Didn't know it was the full version was never orginally stated I take it for granted that everyone buys the upgrade version because it is cheaper

I know what you mean Thor. Those were heady days all right. You had some real bragging rights if you could set up a computer in the days of DOS and Win31. No Plug n Play, you had to set irq's and dma's with jumpers, and god help you if you created a conflict. You had to load all your drivers yourself, autoexec and config.sys. Ah those were the days . Now Windows does it all for you. Just start the install and go have a sandwitch, come back, answer a question, make a selection and it doesen't need you till it's time for a serial number.

Even Linux is almost like this now. Not that I'm complaining. I just think people are losing an understanding of how computers work.

<< it says something like CD01 cant be found or something about not finding my cd drive. what could be the problem? it says it sees the drive in the beginning >>

your cd drive isn't the entire problem but your startup disk is! the generic cd dos drivers on the boot disk don't recognise your cd drive so you get the dos message. you'll need to modify config.sys on the startup disk with the correct dos cd driver for installation to go ahead.
the new drive you're getting should run with the standard generic dos drivers on the normal startup floppy!
