I know everyone is having a harder time because the economy is slowing, and the WTC got blown up. I think everything is really cooling off. This has struck home pretty hard for me. My dad was let go by Fleet bank two years ago, after working for them ( Baybank > BankBoston > Fleet) for 15 years. He had a big job and made great money. Well, he was given a two year severance package, which was excellent for us. However, he hasn't been able to find a job (or even get interviewed!). On top of that I think my parents may get divorced. Basically it means we are going to sell our house and move... gah, I hope they can keep my at my school, that would suck if I had to go to a different school. All of this has been hell for me, and continues to plague me almost all the time. I'm sure other people on this forum are going through the same problems right now, and I extend the best of luck to you and your families. I just hope my dad can find a job soon... I hope my parents don't hate each other! On top of ALL that is my school, lately it's been soooo hard, I just have soooooooooooo much stress i can't really deal with it.

Oh, I found out one of my dogs has two tumors also! Whoopdeedo... there's another thing..

God, I'm sorry I ranted like this guys, but i had to vent a little

Again, anyone who is going through stuff like this, so am i I wish the best of luck, spirits, and health to everyone on Anandtech!

Ouch, sounds like life's got you between a rock and a hard place.

Good luck to your dad on finding a job, if worse comes to worse, maybe he could get a small job (like a local grocery store?) until he finds a decent permanent job.

As for your parents, you might suggest to them marriage counseling. My guess (and this is strictly a guess) is that they'er having trouble *in part* because of the financial strain on your family from your dad not working).

With school, just hang in there and do the best you can. If you do that, you're on the right track.

As for your doggie, that sucks=(. Are the tumors benign?

Hope things get better.

perhaps if you got a job of your own, you'd be able to help put yourself through school... probably wouldn't be able to pay for the whole thing, but that and a couple student loans... it would make you feel a bit more self-sufficient, like you're taking some of the stress of your parents, and in turn should make you feel a bit better too. i had a friend in college whose parents had kicked her out when she was 14. she made it through high school, and made it through college, on loans, working two jobs, all sorts of extra-curricular stuff, and maintained a 4.2 gpa. so.. it can be done...

would be nice if the majority of people in this country took recent events as a learning experience, to collectively grow up as a nation and generations...

in any case, good luck to you.

Windogg - man I'm never gonna touch that stuff, (or at least not until the legal drinking age). . I'm a junior in High school, but thanks for the offer, maybe I'll take you up on it in a few years

Man, I am sorry to hear that. I hope things work out for you and your family. Bad enough to have everything else going on and to have a potential divorce lurking overhead as well. What sort of position was your dad in? I would suggest a placement/headhunter firm to help find him a job ASAP. It does work, especially if he was in some sort of management position. One other thing I might suggest is a job in the insurance industry, such as a claims examiner. Don't know if the pay would be in line with what he was making, but it would be a start. If he worked in the banking industry he will have the background needed, and insurance is something that will be around for quite some time. It actually tends to be a little bit more stable as a job market and somewhat immune to some of the market and financial downturns the economy is in right now.

Keep after school, don't let it get you down.

<< However, he hasn't been able to find a job (or even get interviewed!). >>

That's because he's only entertaining certain positions. He should broaden the field of jobs he is willing to work. If he must wash dishes, then you gotta do what you gotta do. Pride is no longer an option when Mr. Bankerman is about to come for your house.

I won't get into the episode of Dateline NBC where a woman participating in her state's "welfare-to-work" program TURNED-DOWN 3 good-paying jobs because, in her own words, "they weren't jobs I wanted to do." Then proceeded to criticize the state welfare system because they kicked her fat-ass off.

2-year severance is awesome. You'll have time to find a job if he is getting a severance package of that magnitude. When a father's former employee merged with another hospital and he was cut from the CFO (#2) position, it activated the "golden parachute" clause. 3.5x his normal salary (~190K) for 2 years.

dont worry too much, you got time on your side.

talking about streess. sorry to hear about your situation.

I'm in the USA all by myself. My parents are still in Vietnam. I'm a boat person. I have to work and attend school at the same time. I have to pay for everything. Back in high school, my friends would get a new car from their parents and i would get made sometime people my parents can't afford anything. Their making like $10 a day in Vietnam. Oh well, I only have 2 more years at VA Tech. After getting out of college, i have to pay all those stupid loans. blah blah. I need a new car too(new used car). mine is overheating.

Thanks for all the replies guys... I have no idea what my dad is looking into, but I think he is looking at almost everything he can think of. See the other problem is that he is old (60 as of yesterday), and therefore many places don't want to hire him because of that. However, he is really smart and good at selling things and running things, and if he can get an interview I'm pretty sure that he can land a job. As for my dog, well she seems pretty good the docs said the tumors aren't cancerous
