Harddrive became 8GB smaller

I had some probs with my harddrive. First it seemed to crash, but I managed to rescue my most important files. Then I tried to reformat it again by right clicking on it in my computer and formatting, but windows said that it couldn't complete the format. So I tried using the disk manager tool in computer management, it worked actually, but now claims that my 40GB drive is only 32GB. Does anyone know why?

Because it had to mask out 8GB worth of bad blocks. Get the test utility fromt he drive's manuf and run a test. It's likely time to RMA it or replace it. If it has that many bad blocks it's only going to get worse.

I think I'll just put it away. I RMA'd that disk about a month ago and I have to send in the whole computer to get it replaced, and that just a big pain in the ass, especially since a new 40GB disk costs pretty much nothing
