Harddrive CONTINUES to disappear and reappear...

Here's the deal guys..

80GB WD hooked to IDE 1

Lite-on DVD
Lite on CDRW > IDE 2


Have a new 80 GB Hitachi that has been flawless. It is hooked up to a ATA 100 controller card, new BIOS and drivers...

For some odd reason, i will occasionally reboot and the drive will NO appear in My Computer.

I quick check in disk management shows the disk as unallocated, which is not the case.. Acts as if the drive is not formatted and brand new..

Seems like 1 reboot, this time 2 before it comes back and shows 56 GB out of 80 free, and everything seems normal....

What gives?

The hard drive doesn't show in the BIOS because it is hooked to an ATA 100 card,

However, on the next boot screen when it shows devices connected to that its there, also listed in Device Manager and Disk Managment..

The drive is fully functional, i just don't understand how or why it appears, and then disappears like its not there, and there is nothing on the drive.

This is not a power issue, heat issue or anything similar or related to stress..

I don't want to intiate the drive in Disk Management as i fear losing all my data, and dont really want to restore it from DVD again.

Does you ata controller have the latest bios on it?

Just a guess,maybe there's a newer bios that will fix it....

Yep, newest drivers and BIOS..

Is this the result of a flaky card?

PCI / AGP is all within spec also.

have you tried hooking it up to the mobos onboard ide channel to see if it works okay then?

Well I was seeing this before on a 40GB HDD which i did hookup to the board and ran in the to the same issue ocassionally..

On a side note,

I went to install SP2 and got and error about atapi.sys..

I don't think i need to hook it up to the board considering it SHOWS the disk in "Disk Management" but just shows as unallocated or not formatted...

Whats the deal..

Hook both hard drives to the IDE1 on the controller card set to "cable-Select". Primary drive being at the end on your conductor cable.
