Harddrive question

I have a harddrive from my early 2000s Dell which has died.

Would i be able to swap out my current HD and replace it with my old one?
Would i be able to set the old HD as a slave and retrieve data from it?

Yes, i have the necessary cables to connect the old HD to my MB.

it should work, it will probably be very slow compared to modern drives but i dont see any reason it wouldnt work.

Wait... if the HDD died, then it's not working? How are you gonna copy data off it if it's dead/not working?

At least you should be able to boot and run on the old drive. Be prepared for a slew of updates. As for the defunct new drive, making it a slave won't help if it is dead.

first statement is just a little hard to understand i guess ..makeing it seem as the hard drive in that dell is dead..

no, the hard drive is not dead. the power supply from the computer has died. im wondering if i can take that hard drive and put it in my newer computer without any problems.

i just need to get the files from the HDD and then either toss it or use it as a secondary HDD(40gb).

I'm not sure about this, but if you just let windows stash everything the way it likes in a user profile, there might be an issue with permissions, but there shouldn't be a problem with the disk itself.

A secondary (non-boot) IDE disk should have no problem being read on virtually any post-Win98 computer.

But, as is said above - a good PATA IDE drive can be slaved just fine.

because i have no use for the computer anymore. besides the HDD, i can trash the whole thing.

Depends. If the hard drive is making a clicking sound and BIOS cant find it then the hard drive is toast you cant recover nothing from it unless you pay 1000 thousand dollars and go with a recovery company. Soo you can get your data back it will cost you if the drive is clicking its dead you cant do anything about it its a gonner. Sorry if you lost any data. That is why we preach backup or image. Thanks gl, Any SATA hard drive will work on that dell so thats what must be done. Once again if its physical damage its gonners but if the drive is still working you can use Easy recovery professional and recover your files and put them on your new drive. gl

problems have arisen.

i previously thought my current HDD is IDE, it is SATA.

so instead of using the old HDD as slave, i used it as master on my newer computer. Tried to boot it up, windows just won't start. the BIOS recognizes the HDD, but it just won't go into windows. i start up my computer, goes into POST screen, after that it just says

HDD0: ST380021A 80gb
press any key to continue

that is the model of the HD and capacity. after that screen, it goes into the screen with "start with last known configuration" and safe mode. i've tried all the options and the computer just keeps restarting.

is there any way to use my SATA drive as master and IDE as secondary? is there any way to recover my files with shelling out 1000 dollars?

Well you dont set it up as slave.

You just need to buy a new SATA hard drive and connect the somewhat dead one. The dead one will be drive D and C will be your new sata drive.

If you do this and cant see a D, then the drive is really toast my friend. Im sorry and btw I know about this stuff since I used to run a business many many years ago called harddrivedatasavers

If we got a drive that was not recognized or clicking or physically dead we would ship it to a third party they would repair the drive and give you your lost data but it will cost about 1k.

I hope your drive in this case is just a little messed up with bad sectors soo you can at least retrieve your data and do a clean install of Winblows with your new hard drive.

SATA Drives do not do Master or Slave. They require a separate channel, i.e., SATA 1, SATA 2, SATA 3, etc. A PATA IDE drive would be a MAster if alone. You need to set your boot order in BIOS between them as desired.
