I used a silentdrive for a year on a maxtor 7200 60 gig. After the year, the drive failed. No doubt I baked it to death It's clearly stated that they're only to be used with 5400 drives, but I figured I'd give it a shot.

Just buy a Seagate Barracuda and forget about messing with a drive enclosure.

stultus makes a good point. Click the link above and you will find SilentDrive can only dissapate around 6.8 watts of heat. This is not much actually and many of the faster and larger capacity 7200 RPM drives will overheat in the enclosure. Though the noise reduction may be significant, the risk of premature drive failure is too high, IMHO. I would recommend going with a Seagate Barracuda or the "Special Edition" Western Digital 7200 RPM drives. I have one in my computer and it is incredibly quiet on seeks compared to older drives. Idle noise is pretty low, but I am not sure how quiet is "quiet" to you. 5400 RPM drives targetted towards low noise will have lower idle than 7200 RPM units but the loss of performance (higher seek times and lower I/O per sec) aren't worth the tradeoff for me, but you may be willing to make the tradeoff.

http://www.storagereview.com should be the first place to go to find a new hard drive.

The silentdrive did wonders on the electrostatic whine, which is what I was more interested in eliminating. (Seeks became inaudible, too.) I have never heard of WD drives being listed with Seagates as quiet, but I have heard people saying Maxtor SEs are only slightly noisier. The Maxtors are just now (as Seagates have been using) fluid bearings, which greatly decreases both the electrostatic and seek noise. I have not heard of WDs using fluid bearings.

For comparison, I do have a Maxtor 60 gig fluid bearing drive in my Tivo, and it is slightly audible (i.e., if the room is quiet I can hear that it's on). The Seagate 'cuda IVs that I have are inaudible. I can just barely hear them when they're *seeking*. YMMV depending on the noise of the other components in your case - I have a feeling people call the Maxtors quiet because they have a noisy/normal power supply, and not a PSU specifically designed for low noise (as I do - noise is both very subjective and relative, so it's hard to make comparisons and get advice for extremely low-noise components).
