Most of those old arcade clones in the early 90s were way harder than anything we get these days. Same goes for some adventure and puzzle games from that period. I remember it took me a year each to beat Lemmings and Fate of Atlantis back then.
Among FPSs, Thief 2 is the hardest one I've played, although Descent 3 on the insane difficulty comes close. Far Cry (on at least the veteran difficulty) and the Splinter Cell games are fairly tough too. I generally like FPSs to be on the harder side as long as they aren't completely unmanageable. They make you put some thought into various gameplay situations and give you a greater feeling of accomplishment when you manage to complete them.
Neverball from the free games thread is very difficult as well. I've been playing it for a few months now but haven't reached the end yet. Although I have been stuck on one level for almost half that time.
Castlevania ... way back when was pretty hard [80s] ... it took some pretty precise moves and the damn check points sent you waaaaay back and when you finally got to the Count, you had to fight like 3 increasingly more difficult versions of him ... but at least the Ending was cool and quite "worth it". ... it also reminds me that
Ghosts and Goblins [Capcom] was pretty hard too [arcade and n64].
The only thing difficult i found about
Thief2 was getting lost on those big maps.
FC did get hard near the end and
Stalker was tough also on the harder difficulty levels.
Recently ...
Hg:L is damn near *impossible* to complete the 2nd time thru on
Nightmare after you top out at level 50 but the NPCs don't.
