I do not frequent forums at all these days but have been a member to hard for 2 decades. Posted a FS thread selling a 3070. Just tried going to HF and noticed I'm banned.

I got banned because I only used the FS/FT forums. lolwut? is this a new rule? jesus i hope this doesn't ever happen over here.

This is Kyle's hamfisted way of pretending to be important. This rule has been around for a couple years now and yes, like most of the forum rules there it is arbitrarily enforced.

Little does he realize that fs/ft is still hy far the most relevant sub on the site, and by banning people from it he literally affects his ad revenue the most.

You probably got reported for scalping a 3000 series card (yes, it's also a rule) and Kyle saw you haven't posted anything other than fs/ft so banned you. That's my guess.

I gave up on the notion of selling anything online. Too many creepy people now-a-days. I just buy mid to low end tech, keep it forever (my CPU is 11 years old) and plan to give it away or donate it.

Maybe if I get bold I might list on Ebay again. I used to be a gold powerseller there with $10,000 a month in sales.

...back in 2004.

crazy how much places like ebay has changed over the last 2 decades.

i'm a huge guitar/amp/pedal freak, buy/sell/trade all the time and my favorite place(reverb.com) recently informed me any sales over $600 to expect a w2 in the mail. i'm not making a profit on this stuff, just a gear head that loves gear. closed my reverb account.

There has been an increase in flat out stupid rules on traditional forums. As forums ages, so do the people managing it. It's akin to HOAs. Old bitter people with nothing better to do but make up rules that fit them, not everyone else.

Idk ..... Kyle @ Hard was bitter and angry LONG before he became old!

Hmmmm.... I may well have been banned myself (again) over there by now.

It's been quite awhile since I last logged in so I really have no idea! (also really don't care ROTFL)

I used to go on there in college ~20 years ago when I was building/upgrading rigs all the time. Wonder if my account's still active?

report back, LOL

Apparently my account is still working which is odd since the last time I signed in to Hardforum the website itself was still in full operation. (ie: a long time ago)

Interestingly it seems HardOCP sorta exists again? (severely gimped)

To be fair, they didn't just up and decide to start doing that because they wanted to, and I'm sure they'd be happier if they didn't need to.

oh for sure! i should have worded it better. definitely not reverbs fault. thegearpage.net is thriving these days for gear classifieds, only $15 annually to post in the classifieds too.

That $600 rule is new IRS rule that was included in the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan stimulus package Biden signed back in March. These companies are now required by law to send you 1099-K for payment totaling more than $600 per year. It's a shitty law and hurts people like you.

I never thought of it that way, but it does seem to be true.

I used to go to Disboards a lot (Disney forums) and they had very few restrictions on links, talking about competition, etc. A decade later they are extremely restrictive. I migrated over to a discord with some former moderators and they all talk about how the owners hate the boards, but can't get rid of them because they bring in so much traffic.

It's the total amount, not individual sales. You'll get a 1099 from every selling website that tracks sales and every payment company (Zelle, Venmo, etc) that you processed through.

What's going to be important for filing taxes at the end of the year if you get one of those is that you provide your cost basis as well so they don't show it as reported income. If you bought a video card for $500 and sold it for $400 then you took a loss, not a gain.

I suppose I SHOULD have added the word "total" for clarity.

I looked into this, and you can only do that if you have a business license. For private sellers, it's all considered profit.

Glad I sold all my Zippo's in 2020 and early 2021. Had some more collections I was going to list this year, not bothering now.

I don't think this is true. Also, neither does TurboTax:

There are probably better sources but the few I found said the same thing.

I meant that you can not take a "loss" unless you are a business:

And hopefully you kept all reciepts, to prove anything you sold did not make a profit. I the case of my 30+ year old new Zippo's, I sure didn't. They sold for a profit, but without reciepts I can't prove how much.

There is nothing from saying you are a business - no business license required (unless you're doing some very specific businesses), you don't need an EIN (you file as sole proprietor or single member LLC with your SSN), and there's nothing that you really need to do or say to the IRS to make them consider you as a business. Yes, it's true, if you run a loss multiple years, they will classify it as a hobby and you'll lose the income impact.

At the end of the day, it's up to each individual person to determine if they sell enough to warrant separating it off as a business.

just got banned from hardforum for bumping a fs thread I had posted like 4 months ago stating 2 items were sold based on someone buying it yesterday, and to drop prices on the rest of the stuff. Got banned with the “banned for using hard for FSFT”… ffs it’s a 16 yr old account and I even paid for “lifetime membership”. Lol
