Not spending $120 a year for sure.

Buy Windows 8 for 40 bucks now. Get Windows 8.1 for free. That's what I did Windows 8.1 is very nice IMHO, it is a great OS - I think a lot of folks pan Windows 8 without having used it extensively. Windows 8.1 addresses alot of annoyances with Windows 8 and is actually great to use.

That said, I agree that Win 7 users should not be "forced" to upgrade, MS IMO should allow Windows 7 to use DX 11.x just like Windows 8. But that's precisely what MS has done numerous times with DirectX - folks didn't want to upgrade from XP or Vista, either. This has happened so many times over the years and users were kicking and screaming over it, especially from Windows XP. It's happening again. It sucks, but MS won't change what they're doing.

I mean, Windows 8 is cheap if you know where to look. Just the way I see it.

So what now we gotta pay $90 for BF4?

I know brett didn't write the article, but I'd like to see them revisit it with Windows 8.1 preview, since it's free to acquire and I'm sure they have an extra SSD laying around to test it with.

Your 7950s have 6GB of memory in crossfire (actually 3GB, but MSI AB will double the buffer report instead of dividing it in CF).

Nearly all of 4GB, let's just say 4GB, would be 2GB of actual vram use. And that's loaded, that doesn't mean using which makes a difference.

lol Windows 7, sad people clung to this for so long.

With windows 8/8.1 I get basically twice the frame rates they do.

I was one of the first people in this forum to make mention of how much better 8.1 ran the game then windows 7 did, the skeptics figured i didn't do something right and i know i am glad there is multiple articles and now users who can back up this claim.

The skeptics are the only ones suffering. What are the chances of windows 7 supporting 11.1 and 11.2 and becoming equally as playable?

I can't confirm or deny Windows 7's poor performance, I haven't reinstalled it for more than a few days in total since Windows 8 preview came out.

As far as vram usage goes, this is from the unrealistic setting of 1080p with 200% upscaling, and 4xMSAA @ Ultra.

Doesn't get much higher than that for 3GB cards

HardOCP is smoking some crack if they think a 770 like mine is perfectly fine for 1080p with ultra settings and 4x msaa.I hit 1700mb usage at 1366x768 ultra and that is without msaa.

Pretty sure your setup is broken though

I have done multiple reinstalls of windows 7 and windows 8,ran each driver set from 320.49 to 331.40 and still come up with the same conclusion.Hey its beta so perhaps that number will change in the final product.

I have 3821 from my last session at 1080p Ultra with 4xMSAA.

That's 1910MB of vram usage peak, and AMD generally uses more vram than Nvidia.

Had W8 and was running @ high W/ some med settings with no lag spikes.
Tried the new 8.1 and was able to set most of my settings to Ultra without getting any lagg spikes and still loading in fast

Beyond me,there could be the chance msi ab with its rivatuner osd giving false numbers but that is what i use to monitor my stuff.

1700mb isn't that big of a deal as i could crack 2gb if i apply 200% scale resolution at 1600x900 lol then just like at 1366x768 my frames constantly tank into the 30s.

Sounds great. I was looking for some feedback on Windows 8.1 performance compared to Windows 8.

I can't wait to try out Windows 8.1. I'm just going to wait until it's released officially though.

Exactly the point, if it's almost the same as Win7, why upgrade to Win8? If everything I like about Win7 is in Win7, I'm gonna stay on Win7. If 8 offers me nothing over 7, then I'm not going to upgrade. Most people don't upgrade, just to upgrade, they need a reason to do it. MS, is forcing users to do it by excluding 11.1/2 to Win8, which IMO, is a jerk move.

I said the Desktop is almost the same in Both Win 7 and Win 8, i didnt say the OS is the same.

I'd like to see the performance differences between Windows 7 & 8. Do we have that? I'm not quite ready for Windows 8...

Its there with some searches;

I've found win 8 faster - some say there is no difference; but most of those tests were with older games; newer games there is a difference.

BF4 show a lot of difference in this beta; will win 7 get faster yes; but it will never match 8 or 8.1.....as 8.1 is faster than 8

This only applies to BF4, but more games may take advantage of Win 8.x in the future. Hopefully Win 7 performance can be brought up in comparison, and let's not kid ourselves here this is a game in beta status. The final game will be far more optimized for both Win 7 and Win 8. That said, I still think Win 8 will offer the best BF4 performance due to the DX 11.1 optimizations used - I don't think Win 7 will be on parity with Win 8 in BF4. In fact, DICE have made it clear that Windows 8.x offers the best BF4 experience even with the release version.

I think I may finally upgrade to Windows 8 then. I'll have to spend a few bucks at Stardock to change it to how I like it, but those are some massive gains and it's only going to continue in that direction.

I have a feeling BF4 will sell more windows 8, GPUs and CPUs than anything else this year. I still can't get over the difference!

On a side note, I suspect dx will slip into 7 at a later date, they'll try drive win8 sales first.

Get it now, keep in mind that Win 8.1 is a free upgrade and you can still find Win 8 upgrades for 40$ (I think). I saw it for that price a couple of weeks ago. As well if you know someone or have MSDN access you may be able to acquire it on the cheap through your employer or through student pricing.

When Win 8.1 final drops the pricing will be more expensive. 99$ for the upgrade version? I think. You can get Win 8 upgrade for much less and 8.1 is a free upgrade for all Win 8 users.

I played last night, looks like they patched the game. I was getting horrible performance with my setup the day before, now I am getting extremely smooth game play. I didn't check the FPS, but it felt like 60+ and no slow downs. I will say it was beating the crap out of my poor quad. Nearly 100% all of the time on all cores and my cards were only overclocked to 1000/1500 running high usage as well @ ultra settings @ 1080P using windows 98... I mean 7. I am hesitant going to window 8...
