I used Windows 8 on a laptop recently and it was the most clunky, ill thought through GUI I've ever used. For desktop use, Windows 95's GUI is superior.
Having metro on top of the actual OS as some kind of idiot proof playpen is just an insult to anyone who wants to actually get some work done or even for general use. There is absolutely no reason why the metro interface is superior to the taskbar with icons, nor why it should be a layer on top of the actual OS. Full screen apps? Completely unnecessary on a desktop system. Is metro probably good to use on tablets? Absolutely, with keyboard and mouse though? It just slows productivity down and puts more clicks in front of functionality that I use on a regular basis.
It is a tablet UI through and through - designed for an environment where screen real-estate is at a premium and UI elements need to be large enough to press with your fingers.
In its desperate attempt to penetrate the mobile market, Microsoft has chosen to ignore small but useful steps towards a more streamlined desktop OS, which is a shame because some features such as file transfers and the new task manager are really powerful, and something I would love to have in W7.
I'll only ever buy W8 if I can never have to use the metro user(less) interface at all. Is this what W8.1 brings to the table?
