He should get the chair! The chair!!!

Two counts of murder in the second degree (or chipslaughter depending on if he wants to admit he's a nutzoid or not)

Yeah... I tried to say that in my post.

A chip that uses >60watts of power (versus 20watts for Intel) certainly can overheat very easily. It's disturbing how much power both Tbirds and P4's consume. But it's nothing compared to 300watts per Intel McKinley 64-bit CPU (at .13u process!) that Anand warned about. It'll take years for these to become desktop CPU's

cmaMath,
heh heh, NP.

But, it is a good point.
Why don't they use protection like Intell?
Is it expensive or patented?

Wow, I have never seen so many nay sayers. Let's face the facts here, folks. The Tbird is a fragile chip and it has no auto shut down function for when it gets to hot like all the Intel CPUs do. It is time for AMD to wake up and smell the coffee.

For all of you who say it was Kyle's fault. Try telling that to the thounsands of people that have cracked or burned thier AMD Socket A CPUs.

Good point!

Intel's protection has saved me over 10 times.

AMD is building a thermal diode in to the chips on the next revision. So it should work out well for AMD.

PG,

These chips work in the nano second range.. 2 seconds is a lot. (its built in to the core... like the P3).

<Another socket 7 victim jumpgin to Kyles defense!!!>

First off, hardOCP may not always be the epitome of journalistic integrity, but you've gotta give the man props for adding such flavor to his sights and posts - keeps things interesting if you ask me. Love the sight naysayers be damned.

As for frying Athy's - I to am guilty of killing 2!

One was because of some ultra shiatty thermal paste, that I only found out after the fact was rated for chips during the 486 era (not rec for anyting over a 166 pentium) - yes folks - this stuff was absolute shiat!!!

The other was a 4:30AM project: Install a new heatsink in the dark so you don't wake up your roommate . . .Doh!!!!!

really, when would you crack your Socket 7 chip? it's a hell of alot more durable then Socket-A chips are (the core isn't exposed).

"Where'd you get 300w from, Leo?"

I found the following in Anand's article. I only hope I'm misinterpreting this:

"If McKinley is indeed a 0.13-micron processor (which would make the most sense), it is inherently going to be a cooler running processor than the Itanium. The problem of heat dissipation is not completely eliminated by the fact that it is a 0.13-micron processor, since two McKinley processors will dissipate around 600W."

Maybe he meant the current .18u processors?

A real success does not come with not making mistakes in the way a real success comes from falling, know what went wrong and stand up.(trying to sound smart dude)

Listening to you people wine, is annoying. You get what you pay for (period). AMD Gives a good bang for the buck, they have to save money somehow.

If you are going to whine, spell it correctly.

600watts!!! sure they didnt put an extra 0 in there on accident? You would need some major psu's for that.

If AMD will have shut-off mechanism like Intel does, AMD CPUs will cost the same as Intel also

An internal diode coupled with MB-auto-shutdown would not raise cpu cost very much, if at all.

My 2c - when I am bored I go there - lots of interesting/crappy news - heck I find links to new drivers/HW stuff sometimes when I don't even go looking. Anandtech - now that's one boring site - take a look at his last few articles. Sheesh. The guy frys an AMD and tells us - a gentle reminder to us all not to go fixing when it ain't broke but to newbies in particular. His NON-general mayhem forums are about same as Anandtech, Toms, AMDzone, Athlonmb etc etc - they are all the same as far as I am concerned. One of the better forums is Arstechnica but even that gets into the pits sometimes when you look at some of the threads.

HEhehe, this reminds me of when I lived in California (born and raised) I grew up in LA and often visited the norhtern part of the state, when I was up there the folks would allways say stuff like So-Cal sucks... people from LA suck...ect ect... then would come the question "what do people in So-Cal think of us?" And I would have to answer "we dont". Much the same as Hard OCP'rs dont think often of people here...
I like the forums here, and the people, but lay off Kyle... if you dont like him, ignore him, just like he ignores you

Jax out..
