Uploading right now My upload rate is only 50 KB/s so it's going to take almost 2 hrs to upload them.

Finally the vids are done uploading. Both were taken using the 81.85 drivers with the 7800 GTX:

Quality Mode: 181 MB
Uncompressed FRAPS - Quality Mode

HQ Mode: 109 MB
Uncompressed FRAPS - HQ Mode


Anyone that isn't blind or glaringly biased will see that the shimmering problem is very much real with the 7800 cards, especially in Quality mode.

Where can I find the custom Fraps FPS1 codec?

The Fraps codec (FPS1) is put on the system when you install Fraps. If you've reinstalled Windows you will also need to reinstall Fraps in order to play back your movies.

Please keep in mind that if you want to give your raw footage to another person they will also need to have Fraps installed.

Go here: http://www.fraps.com and d/l and install fraps to view these videos.

So is this problem hardware specific? If so, wouldn't it affect 6xxx series cards too? If it's not hardware specific, shouldn't future drivers correct the problem? If they would, this isn't such a big deal.

It was in the 6x series too but was reduced quite a bit via drivers + clamp. In the 7x series it's been around since release, reduced somewhat in HQ mode via 78.03+ drivers but still very much prevalent in quality mode. Nothing has been done since then to address this nor are there any indications that nVidia is working to do away with this problem anymore.

I am saying that for many of us, it's not even noticeable in the games we play.

I posted the thread because the quoted website editors agree with my position, and every story has two sides.

For me, this means a lot: 2 respectable web editors who are not able to see shimmering should not be reviewing graphic cards - they don't have what it takes.

Yes you should see them very clearly. The moire contributes to the shimmering and it almost goes away when you switch to HQ mode.
