Greetings,

I have a ASUS P2b board with an upgraded bios of ver 1014 beta originally 1011 beta.
350Mhz processor. Win 2K SP4
I just recently upgraded to a WD 160gb hardrive and am since limited to 127gb.

I spoke with a tech at ASUS about the BIOS that it should work with a larger drive but I would like to get a second opinion?

I have just installed a 160gb to a MSI K8N Neo4 running Win 2K SP4 with no problem so I know what I am doing, but I don't know if the bios on this P2b is 48bit compatable?

I have checked in admin tools and reads 127gb, I have installed the registy key for larger drives.

Thanks
Jonathon

It is not a BIOS problem, it is an OS problem. I'm not sure about Windows2000, but WindowsXP SP1 fixed this.

For more information about Windows2k, you will have better luck posting in the Operating System section of this forum.

Thanks,

On my other machine the MSI, I installed the drive as a secondary to my master operating drive. It shows up as 128gb then the rest with 21.05 so there is 2 partions.

On the ASUS I have one master drive and I am waiting for something to trigger the 160gb capacity.

Maybe it only works after I install SP4 as a second drive?

Do you know if SP4 fixed this problem? If so, you could slipstream these updates into one cd, and that SHOULD work. Thats what alot of the WindowsXP rigs do. They have to slipstream SP1, and all the HD space is available.

If you didn't have it slipstreamed, and just did a regular install then update, it would come up as 127gb. When you installed the service pack, the rest of your HDD space would be available, but only in a seperate partition. A slipstream onto 1 cd is the only way to get all of it available at once. I am not sure if SP4 fixes this for Windows2000 though.

I did some research and couldn't find anything about Windows2000. Sorry, I wish I could help more. I see you posted in the Operating system section. They should have more info on Windows2000 than I can give you.

No, it is a BIOS problem. W2K SP2 + hotfixes, or SP3/SP4, both support 48-bit LBA in the MS default IDE port drivers, but it also requires BIOS support to be properly enabled.

The P2B was an older board, there are unlikely to be official BIOSes supporting 48-bit LBA, but it was such a popular board, there might be some unofficial ones. Check over at http://www.wimsbios.com/ and see.

Edit: Btw, the IAA won't help here, since the P2B had an i440BX chipset, and the IAA only supports i8xx and newer chipsets. The simplest solution is just to get a PCI IDE controller with an onboard BIOS that supports 48-bit LBA. Promise Ultra100 or newer, CMD 0680 or newer, etc.
