I got this when it was a new thing some time ago. I love it. It's not the fastest thing in the world (200 Mhz) But hacks can spped it up. It's quite a fun hacking project and it looks REALLY COOL!

Hey guys i'm definitely going to get one of these things. But anyone else order one, and if so, have you receive any type of confirmation email? What do you guys think about this .com company? I can't find anything on resellerratings.com . Any info on these guys will help!

hevnsnt,

These wouldn't happen to be the $37 I-Openers that "Secrets" guy was selling on the board, would they?

If they aren't, did Jack say if he'd already flashed them with wild_pencil's customized v5 K63+ bios?

It's better than Webplayer. If you liked playing around with these things as project like me, it could be fund. You should be able to kill some time hacking it.

I hacked mine by flashing the BIOS, installing a harddrive, installing Windows, adding more ram, upgrading to K6-3, adding a HS/fan, installing jumpers to be able to change multiplier, FSB, and volatge. However, after doing all of those (and spending money buying all the parts for upgardes), mine has been sitting in the closet collecting dust.

The biggest problem with I-opener for me was the Dual Scan Screen. As soon as you start scrolling, everthing become unreadable.

It's a fun thing to play with, but it's not very useful especially when you are used to today's fast processors and better monitors.

They're similar, but the webplayer has a mini-pci slot, built in IR keyboard support, and a soldered in national geode processor.

The I-opener uses a Super Socket 7 board, which with some work can support an upgraded CPU, a touchscreen and other hacks.

The biggest problem with I-opener for me was the Dual Scan Screen. As soon as you start scrolling, everthing become unreadable.

The TFT hack is being fiddled with, but no one has it working yet.

Definately a good company to order from. Needed a new bios for my P4 MB and he had it to me in a couple of days.

Does it come with a touch screen, or did you have to hack that on? I'd pay $50 for a touchscreen!

Gee by the time you buy one of these things from the guy and buy all the hack parts, you might as well just spring for a real PC.

I chipped out the epoxy covering the bios chip, reflashed the bios, took out the large heatsink covering the processor, bought a special small, flat cpu fan and heatsink that would fit under a customized piece of 1/16 aluminum plate I made that held the purchased notebook HD, loaded Win 98 on it using specially made cables from my main computer HD using an adapter connection, making custom cables to attach the HD to the Iopener, istalling special drivers for this system, and reading for hours on how to do all this, along with were to buy the parts.

This is just a few of the steps necessary to hack the second generation of these Iopeners. Hacking something made for one purpose into something for another is the point.
If you have to ask "Is it worth the cost", or "Why not just buy a notebook." That isn't the point of this at all, and this isn't for you. It's a project that takes time, for a hobby, for enjoyment, for learning. That's the result. I rarely use mine, but there it is, hooked up to my phone line, ready to go.

The I-Opener is a piece of hacking history, much like the Celeron300A was to the overclocking crowd. The community effort at hacking it in the many versions was totally amazing. $15 for shipping to much?................I paid $35 to have mine shipped from Taiwan..........and got it in 4 days........but I was definitely in the first wave of this phenomenon. The only thing you need to know about the I-Opener and other such devices can be found
here.
