Hardware ISA modem $20 after $20 MIR at OfficeMax

The modem is a Best Data. It says on the box that it is controller based and works with DOS and Linux and will run on a 486, so it sounds like a true hardware modem.
Of course most modern mobos no longer have an ISA slot, but some do, including my Epox EP-8KTA3+.

If you have an ISA slot on your motherboard, these are awesome. I have a good BX board (Asus CUBX) with one ISA slot, and the USR 56k ISA modem has been rock solid whenever my cable connection has gone down. I'm gonna install Linux on the BX system, so both the motherboard and the modem will have an extended life. I have also used two Best Data ISA modems in my systems in the past, and I've found that they're better than most low-end modems (e.g., those with the PCTel chipset).

If you use dialup, then ISA Hardware modems are the way to go! I can't stand PCI Softmodems...

I agree with Wolverine27 (Go Blue!):

I've given up on PCI modems, they're a waste of time. Since I mobo's are supposed to be better off without an ISA slot, I've resorted to using cheap Zoom 2949 externals, $20 - $25 around the web (I got two from a CompUSA clearance bin for $20). I'm stuck with dial-up for a while to come.

My ISA US Robotics modem got fried last night (Lightning). I saw this modem in the weekends OfficeMax brochure and went out and got it. It works fine. My motherboard is an Asus CUVX4with 1 ISA and 5 PCI. Modem works fine on XP. I was happy to get a ISA modem, seems like one of the few ways of avoiding Win modems.

Rebate on this mode is $20. Modem price is tagged at $59 on shelf, but rings up at $40 at till. Modem model is 56SF92. Rebate is valid if purchased between 12 and 18 May.

Next week there will be a rebate on the external USB?? version of this modem (56sx92). I would guess Office Max will have this for $45 after rebate. This rebate is valid between 19 and 25 May.

I purchased a Diamond supraexpress 56i ISA from compgeeks.com about a week ago when it was on sale for $14 +5 S/H = 19. I replaced my old Jaton win modem with this one and now I can always connect at little higher speed. My (f**king Verizon) phone line sucks

Good price for hardware. I wouldnt use a soft modem either.

What chipset do these HW modems use? Is it Lucent? Aren't those PCI call waiting modems by Actiontech(purple box) also hardware modem since it has on board DSP?
