Hardware Virus

I wanted to know if there is any virus that can damage the hardware,like CMOS, ?

Surely a virus can corrupt your BIOS, it's meant to be programmable. If you mean can a virus do serious physical damage? Unlikely.

that's the reason for having up to date virus protection!

I had a virus that wiped out my cache chips on an old 486/66 systems once. It overwote some cache algoritms in the bios and fried my cache chips.

In theory it may be possible, especially with voltage controls in BIOS. If a virus were to be able to adjust settings in BIOS, as well as disable hardware alarms there, then there might be problems. Not sure if that stuff is really possible; just came up with those ideas now.

sure, many a virii can physically damage a BIOS. Chernobyl is the one that comes to mind, but there are plenty of them out there.
