Damm, hot deal and I was looking specifically at this model and unfortunately there is no Fry's in this part of the country, would have been a great deal to PM to Circuit City....

10-4 on that. Here is the circuit city link for those interested.

Potentially a pretty hot deal, especially considering they'll throw in speakers AR. I'm going to head up there tomorrow. $1500 MSRP....Circuit City PM 499.99 - 10% = 449.99 + 3 speakers....sweet

Just need to find cash

I wonder if Fry's would sell to me over the phone? This price beats onecall.com @ $599 +s/h (which is still a good deal) for a authorized dealer.

I *think* that the PM at CC will net you an extra $20 off, not $50, as they're selling it for $699.99. Still a good deal, just don't want you to get there and think they're screwing up the PM.

Yeah, it's 10% off the difference, so only $20. It's only 50W/channel, but H/K's rating is more realistic compared to others. BTW, you can get H/K's top-of-the line, AVR7200 for $850 at oncecall.com if they still have it.

the bay area fry's ad lists this receiver on sale for $599. how come the bay area fry's prices always seem to be higher? anyways, has anyone seen any good reviews on this receiver? my guess is that it hasn't been selling too well, maybe because people aren't ready to jump on the all-digital receiver bandwagon yet.

power output wasn't an issue, am going to use it as a Pre/pro, I have a quality amp already and need the triple crossover.

Here are the CC Reviews. Can't find any other great reviews. This does appear to be the cheapest price on it, even cheaper than Buy.com's.

One knock on it is it's lack of wattage, but that could be because it wasn't hooked up correctly.

Anyhow, heading to CC now.

Peace

I'm kind of Noob at this but does it bother anyone that it only has 2 Optical inputs? Can the coaxial inputs be used for something else so that I (could) connect 4 peripherals and not just 2? On my old sony receiver I have 1 optical 1 coaxial, they can only be used for 1 peripheral it's either or not both...

Y'all might be happier with something with a little more power than 50W/ch. I know H/K is honest about their power ratings, so you're likely to actually get those 50 watts, but unless you have a very small room it won't be enough. I tried the HK 325 receiver which was rated at 55W/ch but decided on the 525 with 75W instead because the 325 sounded a little weak in my room.

I demo'd this today at CC, pretty decent power if you ask me, especially to inefficent Infinity speakers (Less efficient then my Klipsch's).

Regarding inputs, I use a 4 port SPDIF switcher in addition to my 4 inputs on my current Pioneer Receiver, they work pretty good and automatically switch to a higher priority input that you select, not cheap though, about $150, but with all my inputs, it is worth it IMO.

I would also go with the HK 525 over this model. Some people have complained the 1001 doesn't have enough power and bass. The 525 can be had in the $500+ range and has more power.

The advantage of this receiver is that it is a digital one. The entire circuitry and amplification is done digitally instead of the usual analog method. It makes the size extremely small and it produces a lot less heat. I picked one up at Fry's today to give it a try and it is decent, I thought the highs were a little shrill though. I'm going to purchase an optical cable tomorrow to see how well it does.

Since it is digitally amplified it would go analog > digital > analog right? I think with the CD player's digital out it should sound much better.

Well, I called Onecall.com the other day and informed them of the price at Fry's and they decided to reduce the price for all customers, thier price is 499.21 + s/h (no sales tax to most!), here is a Link to it.

Jim used his Jedi mind tricks me thinks. Nice job. I ended up not getting mine (see Dell 20" LCD thread), but it's good to see the price down to this level.

Maybe we'll see the 7200 follow the same route.

I like how the laid out the back on this. REally nice and clean. Unlike some other Amps...

Onecall has a pretty good pic. I wonder how much shipping would be? I guess if I were to get one I'd prob just go to frys or PM it a CC.

If going strictly by the numbers; all other things being equal, the audible difference between a 50W and a 75W amplifier is negligible (less than 2dB). Doubling the power of an amp (from say, 50 to 100W) only gives you a 3 dB increase, which is considered "noticeable". To double the apparent sound level (a 10dB increase) you need 10 times the power.

This stuff is fairly well documented on various audio and home theater sites.

Yeah, I know it's an old thread, but since it's been awakened...

It's not a function of how loud it is, it's a function of how powerful it sounds. You might be able to get the same dB level (or close) out of something with a little less wattage, but it's the distortion. Your 50W might give you 90dB at max power, but with distortion, whereas the 100W could give you 90dB without distortion.

Their website is pretty straightforward, shipping to me was about $21 (cheaper then salestax)

No, it's not.

If (for the same pair of speakers and all else being equivalent) a 50W amp can give you 90dB of clean power, then a 100W amp can give you 93dB of clean power. Take a look here.

any other thoughts about this amp? i'm seriously considering ordering one, as it has to be better than my little manual 4-input GE video selector and panasonic mini stereo setup. i don't have a whole lot of space in my family room, so maybe the power would be okay for me. any suggestions on compact (not necessarily micro size like bose) speakers? i was thinking along the lines of a nice canadian brand like paradigm or axiom, but i'm fairly clueless about this stuff.
