Yes, I was clearly making a sweeping generalization saying that all kids who go to poor public schools are idiots  If Harvard had to choose between 2 kids of equal grades, comprable extracurriculars, and one went to an elite private school with difficult classes and the other went to some high school with 5 kids in Wyoming, most of the time, Harvard will choose the former.

Former? The elite school student? Or the latter? The Wyoming student? O RLY?

well since you're so good at understanding people, you must understand that people systematically overestimate the amount of control they have when they are successful.

schools alone are unlikely to produce an extremely intelligent student, but control for parenting and i think you'd find the results would be different. i know your initial post only referred to schools, but i really doubt there are many kids in bad schools whose parents are providing the home environment necessary.

As I said before, good parenting and good schooling will make a good student, but only innate ability will make a great student. I have no doubt about that.

do you think i care whether or not you have doubt about your own opinion? your lack of doubt doesn't mean what you're saying is any more likely to be correct. good, great, whatever... your initial post uses "good". i don't really care, i just mean good enough to get into harvard.

 Ban. The best students will always be good enough no matter what school they're in. Good students always overcome bad schools.

QFT. JLGatsby has been proving lately that he's not a troll... just misunderstood

Wanna reread what I posted and tell me where I said that those kids aren't good students?

this is true... the admissions committee would have a better idea of difficulty of the elite private school. if they were satisfied that both schools were equal in rigor, they'd probably go with the latter.

"good, great, whatever"

"do you think i care"

"i don't really care"

exactly, but most schools in bad school districts usually aren't equal in rigor, hence my earlier statement

lol you found me out... i'm a moron. not only that, but i lie about where i'm going to school. i guess you must be right about hugs though, since you know them so well. i guess that's why they'd all agree with you as well, that the intelligence it takes to get into harvard is by and large innate. oh... hmm...

What position did you play?

you would see a striking similarity, but do you think there are many students who have the type of parent that would raise them to be a "best student" but still remain in a crappy school? that kind of parent would get their kid into a halfway-decent school asap... certainly there are exceptional cases, such as one where there are no decent schools in the entire region, but i would think very few parents in those areas would have the resources to invest the time needed, and if they did, they would have moved out of the area.

But in America, truly bad schools are also few and far in between, despite what the media tries to scare you into believing.

Apparently you've never been to Chicago, the school situation here is just sad, I really feel bad for the kids. Also the Baltimore school system is'nt a shining example of higher education either.

Nope. Good students can languish in mediocrity at poor schools. Yes, the talent is always there, but that doesn't mean that a talented kid will be prepared for an Ivy League college education.
