has 3D jumped the shark?

I went to the movies with my friends last week and during the previews, by the third or fourth preview for a 3D movie, the entire theater just burst out laughing when they announced that the movie would be in 3D.

Many of the people that make movies still have it stuck in their heads that 3D is a new gimmick and I think that's hurting its acceptance more than anything. I mean, when I see a preview for a half-assed "kid's movie" that's 80% poo jokes and at the end I hear mr. dramatic announcer voice say "IN 3D" my eyes roll into the back of my head and I start to associate 3D with garbage.

3D is just a gimmick...a way to charge people 2x the normal cost of a ticket.

If 3D is done right it can be good...but most movies in 3D suck and arent worth it...

I like it, although I've only actually seen one 3D movie so far (Avatar). I intend to see more and wouldn't mind a 3D TV at home.

I wish it would just go away already. Even Avatar was not good 3D in my eyes. Better then the rest sure, but passable as good 3D? Not in my book. My eyes were fatigued by the end of the movie since anything not in the main focus of the scene was blurry in the background. Hated that the most. I think my 2D Blu-Ray Avatar is far superior to what i saw at the movies.

I think when it is done well and is used not as a gimmick for stuff "shooting out" at you but rather to give greater depth (e.g. Avatar & Toy Story 3) it is fantastic.

So guess when it's at it's best, it's great. When at it's worse it is outright terrible.

If you don't have a 3D TV, I heard that you can go to the game they'll even play it in 3D! Of course you have to rent the special glasses for $50 to get the full effect, but I bet it's totally worth it!

I could not care less about 3D and I don't understand why they're pushing it as something new. It's not really even "3D" like shit jumps out of you from the screen, it's more like your screen is a window with depth...but still just as window. It's 2010...if you're gonna tout something being 3D i better be able to touch Angelina Jolie's tits when I'm watching Hackers for the zillionth time.

This has been exactly my sentiment for a while now. As long as they don't overdo the gimmick of 3D by exploding things in your face and such, it can be a great enhancement to a movie. When they start going for cheap thrills by overplaying the 3D, I start to feel insulted. I want to see a good movie, first and foremost.

eh, technically...you could argue that 3D was good, and certainly was all the rage before film was invented. Stereo viewers were oh-so chic back in the 19th century.

One could argue that it jumped the shark when it was first tried in film (around 1930, i belive?)

People no longer want to see art forms move forward as art. They just want pretty shiny lights to stare at and forget about as soon as they leave. Then they can go home and watch more shiny lights, and forget about them, as well. Then they die unhappy.
