Has anybody passed on a raise?

So family was in town and we got on the topic of money and earnings. One of my family members says he hasn't had a raise in 3 years by choice, and instead gives out that money to his employees to bump up their raises. This seemed really weird to me, and doesn't make sense. If I had the choice of how to hand out raises I would give myself something, even if it was just a bit more then the inflation increase just to keep even with the cost of living. I might keep mine smallish to give employees under me more, but forego it for 3 years? There is no way.

Anybody else forego raises by choice?

My brother in law has a couple times. He's a manager and doesn't want to see his workers get hosed by upper management.

Take care of your employees and they'll take care of you.

Yeah, I don't think I would do it either. Unless I was the owner with some sort of cash kick back after everything was said and done... or if I was being paid a large amount annually.

Depends on what his salary is and if there are factors that increase his total income.

No, but I haven't been in that position. However, I would definitely take a smaller raise in order for the people under me to get a better raise.

I can understand not taking one to give your employees a better raise a year maybe two, or taking a small raise just to off-set the cost of living/inflation but to not take it for 3 years? I know he is making a pretty penny, and he isn't married or anything living on his own in an apartment, but still just increase it so you stay the same year to year when you take into account inflation.

Maybe if he took the raise, it would be enough to bump him into a different tax bracket.

That shouldn't matter though, your tax bracket is just what you pay on your last dollar earned, not all.

Also I don't know exactly how the tax brackets work but I think he is fairly solid in his current bracket, I dont think a ~3% raise (or less) would seriously affect his tax bracket.

Asssuming he owns the company?

Less take home doesn't mean your company can't buy your cars and vacation houses!

I've turned down promotions several times. Not quite the same thing though. (in fact, they often would have resulted in a net loss rather than gain.)

No, there is no way I'd ever pass on a raise. I'd think seriously about having the family member in question institutionalized.

Is he declining all increases in pay, or just declining to take a raise and still accepting an annual cost-of-living increase? I can see situations where I might do the latter, but not the former.
