No, read what me and Crab posted. As of right now, there is no need to preinstall windows then reinstall it again. Just install...go into control panel...and register. That's it.

I tried earlier entering the product key after the installation finished by right-clicking "computer" and going to properties on an empty HD and it didn't work. Is there something different than this in control panel?

Nope I simply clicked "activate windows" by searching in the search box for "register". Worked first try. Out of curiosity when you installed, did you click "upgrade" or advanced install? I chose the latter. Just in case we did that differently.

I did a custom install both times. I didn't click activate windows because I hadn't entered a product key at that point (well, I did but it wouldn't proceed with the install untill I left it blank). I clicked "change product key" and it told me that I couldn't use an upgrade key.

If you have any previous version of Windows installed when you get to the part of the custom install where you select a partition it will consider that an upgrade (apparently) and your upgrade key will work fine even if you delete that partition. I was unable to get my key to work during the first install on a clean drive (I ran DBAN quick erase on the drive first). I installed Windows 7 3 times and the only times it worked were when I had a previous install on the drive. On a brand new drive it didn't work for me at all.

I just tried this and got an error "The software licensing server determined that this specific product key can only be used for upgrading, not for clean installations."

Do the install again deleting the old partitions during the installation process and when you get to that point it'll accept your key the second time around.

I deleted both the system partition and the main partition and it recreated both.

Perhaps its as Tbooth said and its detecting the license off a formatted drive that has not been fully erased. Guess the ol' reinstall twice method will be the method of choice.

This drive had Ubuntu on it before, that's it. I totally wiped it. Trying the reinstall twice thing now.

I'm thinking the detection of the previous install happens before you get to the formatting part in a custom install.

I formatted off my vista disc. Then I put in the win7 disc and installed....so it can't be that.

Alright......

I have a Gateway that came pre-installed with Vista Home Premium. It came with no cds.

I got Windows 7 Home Premium Upgrade. I want to use DBAN then install Windows.

So to fresh install Windows 7 Upgrade just install it without entering the key. Then install again and enter the key?

I have my Vista key slapped on the back of the PC. I think I would have to special order the Vista CD? Don't know for how much? Should I get the Vista CD from Gateway? Any idea on how much?

I want to do a clean install as Vista seems to have some glitches.

Thanks.

So there really is no way to do a clean install (from a freshly DBAN'd hard drive) w/ an upgrade version?

Seems like the jury is still out on this one.. or maybe I'm confused. Some claim they have done clean installs from the update version. I'm waiting to order my upgrade from XP, but would rather have the upgrade than the OEM so am holding off a few days.

I had vista home premium on the laptop I worked on yesterday. It would only let me custom install Win 7 Pro. Unlike XP where it asks for the key during the initial phases of the installation with7 it did not ask for one until the whole installation was done. Under systems tab in control panel click on the information tab (I think) and it will give u the option of changing or to input the key. Then click on activate and it the "genuine" sign shows up.

As for installing it on a bare drive I have read mixed results. Read elsewhere that with the student version the 64bit one is full(people have had luck with installing it on the bare drive) while the 32 bit is "upgrade only". Please dont quote me on this.

Have the pro upgrade from the student deal. Installed on an SSD that wasn't just formatted, but had the NAND completely wiped clean from firmware upgrade (Vertex 1.41b -> 1.10 -> 1.30 -> 1.4). Did custom install, used my key during the installation, activated today. No problem.

I installed Win7 on a new partition using the upgrade disc from the student deal (made the ISO myself and burned it). Left the key blank during installation and just hit next. The install finished and it booted but would not let me activate - said the key couldn't be used for clean installs, only upgrades. I put the disc back in and performed an upgrade install over top of my clean install. It finished and then I activated online - it prompted for the CD key, I entered it and it accepted it.

Activated, updated and have MSE installed now.

Just performed a clean x64 install with an upgrade version. It only asked for the Win7 CD key and activated it without problems. For me, it worked just like a full retail copy. (I previously had a 32 bits Vista install, and could not upgrade unless doing a clean install)

So you had an existing Windows install on a partition when you installed Windows 7?

I installed 7 Pro from DigitalRiver - I've heard conflicting opinions on whether or not it's an upgrade. I installed it on a blank hard drive. It would not accept the license key, so I left it blank. Windows installed, and then I ran setup again from within Windows. This time it accepted the key- activated without a problem. I'm guessing it was an upgrade version?

Yes, it is.

I did the DR student upgrade as well. Downloaded the files, converted them to a .iso file, burnt to disk.

Installed Win7 Pro on a clean HDD, entered my key and it activated no problems.
