has anyone been to San Diego and not wanted to move out there?

this is my 2nd time out there, and this time more than the previous time, i really want to move out there. if i didn't have a lot of family here (MD) i'm pretty confident that my wife and i would simply pick up and leave. we bought a house 2 years ago and we really like it a lot, but damn, it's just awesome out there. we were staying with our friends at their house so it's not like we were in the touristy area the whole time too. but just the whole life style out there and the way things are is so chill and different. they are even trying to convince my wife and i to move out there and are willing to find me a job out there.

just curious on most people's thoughts who have been out to san diego and liked it, if they wanted to also move out there. yeah housing prices are crazy, and my friends are actually renting a house since they can't afford to purchase one, but it seems that is what a lot of people do out there.

I've been to San Diego once. It was fine, but I had absolutely no desire to move there. My wife went to school there and seemed to like it, but we also have family in the area who have mixed reviews about living there, so I dunno. Not really my cup of tea, I think.

I live here... and yeah, it is awesome.

My wife and I were living in the south bay area of Los Angeles and the company I worked for at the time built a brand new facility in Carlsbad and offered a nice moving incentive if we relocated there. It was a no brainer. Of course we would relocate. Who wouldn't?

Standard of living changes a lot when you move from one city to the next. The 'norms' change when comparing two areas so geographically different, but so do expectations.

What is it about San Diego that makes you want to move there? I totally get that the climate and food options are different. Personally, I never was a fan of MD/DC area for living...but I'm not willing to pay to move to such a crowded part of the country either. At least you're not wanting to move to LA...

It's nice in short spurts I'm sure, but just as with any area, there are plenty of downsides.

That said, I too would move out west if I didn't have family here. Even though every area has downsides, I still have to assume certain downsides outweigh others. I think overall, you'd live a healthier life somewhere where it is sunny most of the time.

do you like doing "beachy" things? i just like the whole vibe around there too. even my friends house who was like 15 minutes from del mar (closest beach to him) felt like it was a "beach house". also the food out there is crazy good, even the quick places to eat like jersey mikes and mxn.

I loved my time La Jolla. Absolutely would live there again if work and life allowed. COL is just too much for the lifestyle we like to live. If right opportunity came up we would go back in a heart beat. I lived in a villa on the water payed by San Diego Opera when I was a resident artist there. OMG that was the best

My gig immediately after San Diego was Tulsa ><

Not me. The place is nice but I always feel claustrophobic there, trapped between the ocean and mountains/deserts in an earthquake prone area with three million of my closest friends.

There aren't real seasons around your house. You have to drive to the mountains to get spring, fall, and winter.

If you don't have great income potential, it can be difficult to buy a nice place.

Family 3 time zones away kind of sucks.

Traffic can be pretty bad.

Those are the reasons I can think of. I'm moving back to CA soon.

where i stayed in san diego it felt less crowded than the area i live in, and i'm on the outskirts of dc. actually stuff felt pretty spread out out there. the roads never felt too crowded (although we did hit some rush hour graffic).

i just like how much outside stuff there is to do and how close to the beach it is, and how you can get the "beachy" feel any day. my buddy and i got up early at like 5 and went surf fishing before he had to go to work. then later that day my wife and i checked out torrey pines and hiked the cliffs down to the beach. saw a ton of locals exercising there too, so it's a place that it seems isn't just a tourist trap (and was pretty damn sweet).

then just to wake up and it's sunny and 70 like every day lol. just awesome weather. also, the people out there are super friendly and outgoing compared to here on the east coast where everyone is up tight and assholes.

we went into del mar pizzeria and it was my buddy and his daughter who is 4, while we waited for our wives and their infant to meet us, and a guy at another table who was by himself saw that my friends daughter was hungry as we waited for our pizzas, so he said she could have a slice of his pizza since he couldn't finish it all. then he offered my buddy and i a slice and we chatted for a while until he left. then 15 minutes later when our pizza came, they didn't deliver the 2nd pizza. we thought it was cooking but 10 minutes later my buddy asked them what's up. turns out the guy forgot to put the order in for it and we didn't pay for it either. but he ended up giving it to us for free since they forgot to put it in the computer and charge us for it, but they were just extremely chill and apologetic about it.

just not used to seeing such friendly people around here. everyone is always up tight and a dick to strangers for the most part.

yeah seasons are the one thing they said they do miss, but the tradeoff is worth it to them. and i can see that, because as you said, if you desire, you can get them if you really want to by driving an hour or two away. they also didn't have any family in the dc area before they moved, so they weren't leaving any family behind.

I was in SD last month. It's so nice that I may just move there even though I can't afford it, and join all the homeless people I saw.

Well, at least you're probably used to at least a somewhat higher cost of living

yeah, it is higher out there, but not significantly. but i mean you have to pay to play. if it was cheap as shit out there, i'm sure it wouldn't be as nice as it is.
