LOL. But when I midwesterner comes out to California he expects warmth and sunshine. We're used to cold weather here, though this polar blitzkrieg has us 20 degrees under our norms right now. It's supposed to be 50 right now. (I've complained to management).
I was there one April and the it was cold and foggy all morning. Just wasn't what I was expecting. Beautiful city though.

SF is a weird collection of microclimates that influence each other so conditions are somewhat...unpredictable and highly location dependent. Drive down the peninsula or into the east bay and you'll generally get more typical weather.

I'll still take the bad days here over any day from last winter in the frozen hellscape that the midwest became. Going back and forth this winter is going to be rough. :\

Is the population density > 50 people per square mile? If so, I wouldn't want to live there. I hate people.

I so agree. Unfortunately I have to work. And I'm too city-raised to be the kinda person who could self-sustain at this point in my life. Someday. I guess you could say, I aspire to be DrPizza.

Born in San Diego. Spent time in HI when very young, then 1st-9th grades back in San Diego. After that, a year in Cleveland, and then Michigan ever since.

Wouldn't move back.

I still remember my shock at how blue the sky could be when I got out of that polluted desert shithole.

i have no idea what some of you are talking about with the traffic, and now this blue sky thing. i have probably over a hundred pictures taken last week with crystal clear blue skies with absolutely no clouds in them either.

My two brothers live in the SD area (in Pacific Beach) and when I visit I get the same feel. People out there are just happier and healthier. You see far less people smoking, people outdoors, at the beach, etc. And this is all year. Traffic isn't bad either. It's not LA or NY. With that said, my little brother is barely getting by an entry level engineer, and my older brother is doing a lot better being much higher up on the pay scale, but there is the obvious price to pay.

And since we all like surfing, yeah, I'm jealous. At least if I feel I need to GTFO of town, it's an hour flight and that's the majority of my expenses.

The weather is a nice advantage but the downtown is lacking in comparison to what LI/NYC have. We have beaches (numerous), the food (big minus for SD), the entertainment (shows, sports teams). Visited my brother when he lived there and it wasn't anything super special. Was a beautiful day of course.

So, which team do you root for, the New Jersey Jets, or the New Jersey Giants?

...and not a desert.

It's close enough to one. The rainfall is just barely above desert conditions, most of their water is imported, and they get pwned every time some dumbass starts a fire during the Santa Ana winds.

EDIT: It is pretty clean compared to any other larger city I've been to though, except maybe Denver.

I'm not sure you know what a desert looks like.

I've lived my entire life in former territory of Mexico. You apparently think a near-desert is no longer a near-desert when you put grass yards and golf courses everywhere.

So you're agreeing that San Diego is rather arid and would appear much more desert-y without their dependence on Lake Mead?

And that whole beach thing. And the wonderfully non-desert like weather year round.

It's a nice place but I prefer LA. However, they do have Phil's BBQ which is a big plus for them.

Sure I'd love to live there. But I'm originally from California, and I'm longing to move back, so pretty much anywhere in California except the San Joaquin valley sounds good to me.

The only thing desert-like about the nice parts of SoCal is the lack of rain.

You realize that's pretty much the definition of a desert, right?

EDIT: And define "nice parts". I actually like some of the more peripheral and less green areas for hiking. Preferable to fake suburban foliage, anyways.

I loved LA as well. Was there from the early nineties into 2000. Lived near Runyon canyon when I first got there and had a house in Silverlake. I have to say for my 20s LA was the best. Moved from Chicago during winter and saw the light! If wife didnt land a good gig in NYC I would probably still be in my old house. Loved that place. If I could go back I would have bought a dozen houses in my old neighborhood all million dollar homes now.

LA has an amazing array of of EVERYTHING. San diego was much tamer comparivetly. Sunset strip was nuts in the 90s

high cost of living and way overpopulated

too expensive and too inconvenient, not a hard choice at all, no matter how good the weather is

I spend a lot of time in San Diego for work. Id personally never live here myself. I like seasons. I like green foilage. I hate the traffic...or more just how shitty people drive.

It does have some nice advantages...good food places, warm year round, ect.

But its just not for me. Ill take my house on an acre and be 20 minutes from work over having to go an hour away to get that in SD

I was just there last weekend and loved it. Stayed in Pacific Beach. The weather is amazing, the food is great, and the people just seem so much happier\healthier there than they do in the east. I don't really get the hot chicks wearing converse\vans all the time, but I could get over it. I also love LA. I hate Orange County though.

The cost of renting isn't outrageous compared to a nice place in most major cities, but the cost of purchasing a home there is ludicrous. My brother owns a home that backs up to Runyon Canyon in Hollywood, and despite his & his wife's high income, it took them years to save up the cash to buy vs rent.

I got offered a .gov out in LA last year that paid $100k, but I felt like I'd take such a big standard of living hit that I turned it down. I guess I'd rather have nice homes & cars & stuff in a shithole than live modestly in paradise.
