Has Anyone "Bought" Winrar

WinRAR rocks. I too bought the license a few years back and never looked back. I just like the UI, does everything I want in just a few clicks. 7Zip lacks UI vs RAR.

Yes, mine is paid for. The cost is very reasonable and you get all upgrades to newer versions free, as compared to Winzip who charges high fees, every time a new major release comes out.

You can customize 7zip's interface, and the iconset as well.

Also, who gives a damn if it never came out of beta. The releases are branded as stable, and that's what matters. Names are totally irrelevant.

I've been using winrar lately because I've needed to put some large archives on box.com, which has a 250MB file size limit, and 7zip's self extracting archives won't split.

Neither winzip nor 7zip, nor anything else I've found at anything like the price of WinRAR can do any of these.

You might not think you need these features, but when you realise that you do, it's usually too late.

I am using PeaZip at the moment because it is free and does not have a bunch of crapware in it like 7Zip seems to have. It works for me.

Crapware? I just installed it last week, and didn't get anything but the program. Nothing wrong with Peazip though...

i am not sure what I got but if my memory serves me correct I had to deselect a bunch of stuff during the install to only have the program...maybe it has changed since?

I didn't get anything like that. Perhaps they experimented with crapware addons in the past? I seem to remember sourceforge has had some bundling "issues", but I might be confusing them with some other site. I get a fair amount of stuff from sourceforge, and none of it has had crapware bundled.

lol. You only make updates to your app if there are bugs, changes needed or other such compatibility issues arise. It works perfect, even with Windows 8.1. Not every program needs updated constantly. Also the last I knew of, the .rar, .zip files and how developers pack .exe's..etc has not changed any but the author updates his website and isn't quite the same as abandon ware.

Well, truth be told, if a software isn't updated in a while, it usually means it's not maintained, and that means nobody is fixing the bugs that inevitably do arise. You may not be experiencing any bugs, but there's always stuff to do, use cases to accommodate, optimizations to be made, library updates and whatnot...

Look at Winamp: it's been dead for years but there's updates every now and then. It's still largely the same software it was in 2003, but they've still managed to spend 10 years fixing things and stuff...

Morbus what are you on about with Winamp? Dead? How do you mean? Dead and updates doesn't quite fit together.

UniExtract, that program is useless (for me) now. I only use it to extract (well, I tried to) installers, and that's where it miserably fails because of not being updated for 4 years.

7zip is good enough for home use, but if you're dealing with very large amount of files (500K to 1mil+), WinRAR is superior. More stable and more efficient.

Winrar is always being updated ... now at V 5.0.1 ... seems they have an update every few months or so.

The real 7zip and not some malware infested crap file from "mysuperdownloads.com" is a tiny 1 meg installed application. There isn't any malware or "check boxes" for tool bars and all that crap in there. Sounds like some people need to work on their safe web surfing.

True, but if recovery records are really important, MultiPar will read appended PAR files to 7-zip archives nicely. I feed 7-zip files and PAR's through a script. MultiPar is as free as 7-zip too. Alternate data streams... why would you need to store the fact that a file was "downloaded by IE?" Pardon the ignorance but isn't the data what is important?

I tried PeaZip out recently for a while but found it slow and the interface cumbersome. IDK where you downloaded 7-zip from but the 7-zip.org downloads do not have anything malicious.

Efficieny is a broad term, if you are looking for compression ratio efficiency 7-zip is just about unbeatable. It even spanks RAR5.

Oh lordy that's a goody. When I was working on a system which had WinZip 8.3, I was all sentimental.

I use both 7zip and WinRAR. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, so it doesn't make much sense to stick to just one camp.

7zip:
* free
* better compression

WinRAR:
* faster
* optional resiliency through reed-solomon recovery
* MUCH better support for splitting large archives
* much better self-extraction module
* WinRAR doesn't have the bug with opening images on Windows 7 and newer (the problem is caused by 7zip deleting the image when it detects that the spawned process has ended, but since the default Windows image viewer is implemented as COM and not a traditional process, 7zip detects termination incorrectly... it's a REALLY annoying bug that means that viewing images in an archive requires me decompressing the entire thing)

If I'm packing something up to send to someone, I use 7zip because of the size reduction. When I'm backing huge amounts of data onto Blu-Ray discs for long-term archiving, I use WinRAR for the better archive splitting and for the recovery record
