I just noticed after doing some updates that MS has made the Genuine advantage add-on mandatory, where as you used to be able to disable that add-on before.


I haven't really heard anything about this out there and didn't come up with any hits doing a search of the forums.

This is a very recent change apparently.

i think you can still bypass it, but i'm not 100% sure

there's nothing to worry about though because you have a legit copy, right? right?

MS has been on again/off again about that for a while, trying to decide if it is better to let pirates have updated copies of windows to slow the spread of viruses and other exploits or to punish them and not let them update windows at all.

Guess I haven't done my updates as much as I should have.

My brother actually pointed this out to me and sure enough it does the same to me after doing my updates.

And YES my copy is legit.

i noticed that too, im guessing that there is an update you can uninstall to enable the option to disable it.

i haven't messed with it though

Um I just did a rebuild and now it won't let me disable the genuine advantage add-on. It says system admin only, I"AM THE SYSTEM ADMIN! I added a new Asus A8N-E and 7900GT

Any info will be appreciated.

I noticed it to, while it's not a major issue for as I use genuine software, if is another pain in the ass to go through while updating new systems, especially if ActiveX hasn't been enabled

Windows 2000 has had the genuine advantage bullcrap for windows update for awhile now....pity no new updates are availible

My Windows has not been patched since they started WGA. And to be honest, I don't care. My network is hardened enough externally to prevent 99.9999% of the possible issues from creeping in, and my network is hardened enough physically to prevent 100% of the possible issues from creeping in.

And yes, I'm legit.

besides I don't go through MS website usually, I have auto updates set to tell me when there are updates - but not do it by itself, I have to tell it to dl/install them. Something about software automatically downloading stuff bugs me... I want control

I'm not sure what you mean. I'm pretty sure I got an update 2 weeks ago.

Anyway, I usually would just copy the filename into a filemirrors.com search engine and download the update that way. It takes less time then to find where ever I put that cd case.

I've always just set automatic updates to pop up when there's updates. And any driver updates I just seek out myself. I just checked, don't have genuine advantage on my machine. Guess I just don't have to download anything else from Microsoft.

But I swear, sometimes when I'm building new systems for people, I go through the Windows Update site without ever having to install genuine advantage. Or maybe sometimes it just installs itself and doesn't go through that multi-page process in IE to validate for the first time?
