Has anyone ever donated marrow, through the traditional needed in hip method? Could you describe the experience?

traditional hip method - there's a local anesthetic, so removal of the marrow isn't too bad. there's pain afterwards though. about 24% of donations.

the other method is more like blood/platelet donation, and that's used about 76% of the time. try to do that one if you can.

Never done it, but its basically drilling a section of your bone out, not the most comfortable thing in the world.

They use a hollow needle to extract liquid bone marrow from your pelvis.

Joining the registry is something I've always meant to do but never got around to.

My experience:
A little novocaine first, so you feel a little stick.

Then the big needle that goes through the bone - you can hear it, but it doesn't hurt. Then they aspirate a bit and that hurts some, but nothing serious.

Then a band aid and on your way. Leaves a small bruise, but again, nothing serious.

Whole thing took maybe 15 minutes.

Wouldn't really bother me to do it again.
