Has anyone experienced any strange behaviors on their smartphones?

I have an Android phone. I use Google's Messenger app as my default SMS application. Lately, I've been getting phone calls from a particular number. When I searched for this number, others have also received unsolicited calls from the same number. So, I kept ignoring its phone calls. Yesterday, I noticed that my Messenger app recorded an SMS text that supposedly originated from my phone to said number. The text read "I'll call you later." I swear I did not send this text. I was at work and my phone was locked away. I also noted that I had a missed call from said number one minute before the SMS message time stamp. As far as I know, I'm not aware of Google Messenger automatically sending SMS messages on my behalf. Anyone experienced something similar?

Sounds like some kind of malware. Android is actually super insecure. You can get infected simply by opening a specially formatted text message, and countless other ways. Perhaps the initial phone call is what loaded the malware into it. A specially formatted call display name perhaps could cause code to execute, in theory anyway.

Android has an option of a menu that comes up when the phone rings. You can select a line that texts them back such as "I'll call you later" or "I'm in a meeting". You could've done that without knowing it since they make it easy to do (such as when you're driving and you just want to reply that you can't pick up). It's just 2 taps and it's sent. You said it was locked away but maybe you had it at some point - that's the only thing I can think of.

lol my mom had her phone at church and a speaker was nearby and it picked up and Siri is like "I'm sorry I did not understand" right in the middle of church. Was pretty funny.

Why were you watching that in the line at the supermarket?

Bingo

Not knowing what phone the OP has, it's very easy on some phones to send an autoreply of "I'm driving" or "I'll call you back later" with just a swipe in a certain direction or a couple taps like you said.

cliffnotes: OP is a paranoid nut, and isn't aware of all the cool shit his phone can do

I'm aware of that option, but the call and text happened at 16:01 and 16:02. I put my phone in my locker and didn't access it until 17:30. My locker is locked, and my phone has a pattern lock.

The only thing I can think of is some phone assistant like Google Assist acting on my behalf. If that were the case, then it's interesting that it was able to tell a number as cell phone and sent it a text response automatically.

Does your phone have a "do not disturb" option that will auto reply these things even when you're not there?

I checked my settings. Although I have a Do Not Disturb option, I do not have any active rulesets that would cause to auto reply. I've never even messed around with rulesets.
