if it wasnt for games, i'd have a Mac if not Linux. I just now experienced another completely random problem. i made no changes in 2 days except browse some forums, i rebooted earlier and Firefox will not load. reinstalled it, all that comes up is the .exe in taskmanager. How odd, so after an hour of tinkering i'm forced on Opera....see, this is why some hate Windows and their stupid registry.

oh, goody, my AV, just this minute notified me that its expired despite i have 106 days left, something deactivated it i guess..probably registry issue *sighs
time for a reformat.

So it's Windows fault you run crappy software?

Go for it, you'll be pleased.

I tried that.

I had to go back to windows for all the things OSX doesn't do.

Unless your computer habits are very narrow, OSX is always going to be a secondary OS. By that I mean you'll always need windows or linux as well as OSX. With win7 or Linux you can probably get away with not running anything else.

why would you need linux if you're running os x? heck why would you need anything else if you're running windows, os x or linux?

Not sure what this really means? I ran OS X full time and anything I needed, there was a port from Linux or I could use Darwin port and I'd def call myself a power user.

Last time I tried editing AVCHD video in OSX it was not good, it may have changed.

I know gaming isnt as good on OSX.

That's definately not true, I run OSX full time, except for gaming, that is all I've found it can't do properly.

Read back through the thread, you'll find the issues people have had on windows 7 whilst posting... Ha... Also index searching has been in OSX for god knows how long.

and system restore has been on windows for god knows how long, yet "time machine" is somehow "magical"

Yeah, thats what lots of people told me as well.

Then I tried to edit some stuff from my HD camcorder.

Then you get the advice that your camcorders not the right one, you need to convert all your video to .movs, etc, etc

While in window it was select video----edit---job done

dude c'mon, maybe not magical, but it works a hell of a lot better. i'm really surprised microsoft didn't do something better with system restore for windows 7, time machine is pretty kick ass. even simple things like asking if you want to use an external hard drive for a time machine backup when you first plug it in. it's REALLY easy to use, and for a lot of people that is huge.

in much the same way wmv is the default for windows, mov is the default for os x. however, as in windows, you can get a program to do damn near anything if you look a bit. one of the great things about os x is the focus on the UI and making it as easy to do things as possible.

No it didn't.

I had a thread in the Apple forum about it.

Its fine if you like OSX and it suits you, but to say it can do all that Windows can do is obvious bullshit.

Literally dude, I've been using OSX for years and I am yet to go "Oh looks like OSX can't do that, I'll have to use windows".... Except gaming.

the apple forums are about useless, macrumors has MUCH better forums if you really need help.

I'm talking about AVCHD files, not wmv or mov.

You know the one that all camcorders use.

The one that windows has no problem dealing with.

i don't have a digital camcorder. however, you mentioned something about converting to mov so i thought i would clarify that. sorry if it wasn't what you were talking about.

ahh, a sony format. well, sony/panasonic. it looks like iMovie doesn't support avchd, so that would be the problem. maybe it'll change with '11. there are 3rd party programs that should edit the video just fine though, according to it's wiki page.

No but I know people who use Final Cut to edit AVCHD files... So I assume...

it looks like only the newest version of final cut pro supports avchd. however for your average home user i wouldn't expect them to drop the money on FCP to edit movies of the kids. i know i certainly wouldn't.

Yeah thats fair enough, I wouldn't either, I just got it from work, but I'm sure other apps do, I just cba to do the research, at the end of the day FCP is where it's at for video editing.

Check the last post in the thread. Final Cut Pro it'll handle pretty much anything. There's a department at my uni that uses it for just this. In future try the macroumors forum they'll help ya. I'm on there too...

It didn't. Its the only time I've pirated any software.

According to google it does, and I know first hand that people at my uni use it for this...

Dude, I went to the effort of downloading something, installing it, and then blowing my whole OSX install because it didnt work.

Given how much Final Cut Pro costs you cant really blame me for testing it.
