Apple = play ??? :hmm:

Doesn't gaming qualify as the most common component of 'play' on computers? I use my computer mostly to play (games) and that is one of the main reasons I wouldn't switch to a Mac.

for me play = sitting on couch doing nothing, listening to music, watching videos, etc.

gaming is serious business.

I bought a Satin case around 8 months ago, recently took it off to clean up the dust and the macbook pro is still in perfect condition. A little investment that'll pay off when you want to sell it.

Yup, I've had a white Macbook and a silver Macbook Pro and both were in mint condition when I sold them. My sister-in-law has a silver Macbook Pro and it looks terrible - scratches, dents, dings all over it (it's the older style aluminum, pre-unibody). Cases = win.

iSkin makes some good rubberized keyboard covers that you can actually type on:

http://www.iskin.com/protouch_macbook/common_features.html

One of my professors had one...I've always hated keyboard covers, but this didn't block typing at all, somehow.

One other thing I've tried is the microfiber wristpad protectors:

http://www.marware.com/products/MacBook_2/Silicone-Protection-Pack

They were nice when I had a white Macbook - kept it from getting too dirty. Dunno if you'd need them on a metal unibody.

I don't get this... it's the same with the iPhone. Apple designs a sleek product, both the MacBook Pro and the iPhone... regardless of how it works, we are all attracted to the design, yet the first thing people do is add some stupid case to add weight and bulk so that it doesn't get scratched. Why pay even a portion of the premium if you plan on doing this, because IMO, you aren't truely enjoying it.

I guess I just don't give a shit about design. I also don't pay for "premium" hardware and I don't like OSX. Guess I'm sticking with Windows on a non apple PC for a while.

There's a reason why they have "Bootcamp" on Mac. You don't see Windows people loading up OSX.

I'm on a windows machine right now, go home and open up my macbook while playing Sc2 on my PC.

So let me hear your first hand experience on how a PC is superior to the MacBook for everyday tasks not including gaming

And to answer your question, only the best.

For starters, Microsoft Office runs like crap on a Mac, and in most office settings, MS Office = productivity. Also, being able to hook up a projector is quit useful. Lastly, the fact that Quadro FX's take forever to update it's drivers, let alone having compatability with OSX months after their PC counterparts is somewhat hampering if you're doing some rendering work. Heck, it was only a few months ago that Macs finally got decent drivers for the Radeon 5000 series. You can blame nVidia or AMD for that, but the problem remains that macs are still a niche product and thus would always be second priority when the other 90% of the population uses a different standard.

I would venture to state that the only thing Macs can do at an equal level to PC is basic web surfing/word processing. In the design field, it use to be that Macs had a huge advantage due to their established userbase and community support, but that has largely eroded.

i thought, "OMG", but that's about it. After looking at all that "prettyness" i went back to W7.

Hackintosh FTW...

I did use a friend's Mac, several times. I did go "omg", but that was follwed by "why the hell do people buy this shit". Then I went back to my PC and thought "thank goodness I don't follow fashion".

hmmm?

We have 15 macs on a network and we can access all of them with no problems.

ctrl atl delete? You mean task manager? Check out Activity monitor under applications/utilities or if you just want to shut down unresponsive programs you press alt+command+esc

copying file paths? yes please.

http://www.macworld.com/article/133299/2008/05/pathcopy.html

You can lock and log the machine under system preferences> security

Me thinks you needs to spend more time with the machine.

Me thinks you're an idiot.

The fact that you have to install a third party app or do some stupid work around to simple copy a freaking file path is rediculous. Any OS worth its weight in a corporate environment needs to support simple file path copy. People cut and paste file paths at my work all the time. I shouldn't have to jump through hoops because OSX is too stupid to include this basic function out of the box.

No, what I mean about network drive connection to network drives automatically. You have to setup your login to automatically connect to the drives. But the problem is that even if I click "hide", the drives pop open every time I log into the machine. So If I have 4-5 network drives added to my login script, the stupid machine pops open 4-5 windows. I was told on the Apple forum to click "hide" and it wouldn't open, but that doesn't work.

Control + Alt + Delete as in a simple way to lock a computer, switch users, shut down and log off.

I just picked a few of the things. There are quite a few other problems that make it a pain in a corporate environment and as a "user friendly" OS. I like the OS a lot, but it does lack in some aspects.

JSt0rm, despite the use of 0 instead of o, is not an idiot.

But he does need to be less condescending on a forum full of advanced computer users... of course, what else do you expect from a forum of advanced computer users?

For the $, I think something like the HP Envy is a far better buy. Personally I also flounder trying to do simple tasks in OSX, too many years getting used to Windows for better or worse.

I do respect recent Macbooks for several things though :

Invariably great screens
Invariably great touchpads
Invariably very good battery life
Invariably unfriendly towards upgrades/maintenance (non-snapout battery FTL?)

windows doesn't natively support copying file paths either.... unless you're referring to folder paths in the explorer bar.

i use clickie. i can right-click on any file and "copy file path".

So.... it does

I guess you have to separately copy the name of the file and the extension for it to truly be the full file path; but I don't see as how that invalidates the point that it's much more of a pain in OSx.

If you want to game on a MBP... It is a very good idea to bootcamp with W7.

The OSX performance hit is HUGE, even on the same hardware in the same game.

Also, how old is the Geforce 9XXXm now? They really need to update the GPU to a GT440m or something in that neighborhood.

Everything has it's pluses and minuses, I use both and I like both. And both have things the others, I could care less about the file path thing but could see how a lot of people don't like the fact it's not there. I do however not like I can't print a selection in Safari. But on the flip side I love Spaces in OSX which Windows has nothing even remotely similar. I'm sure a 3rd party Win app exists but the same can be said about the file path thing in OSX.

maybe because it's harder to get OSX to run on non-apple hardware. It can be done(hackintosh) but most will not do that. It's much easier just to use windows only or dual boot linux.

how do you set a corporate screensaver timeout that locks with the user's network password? How do you send a certificate to it automatically when it is joined to the domain? How do you add trusted sites to the browser? How do you deploy software from a centrally managed location?

I could go on, but what I'm getting at is how do you do group policy and SCCM software pushes on Macs in a corporate environment?

Tried a dual Xeon mac pro whatever. With a quadro, 32GB RAM and RAID storage it was expensive. Sent it back in less than a week.

I cannot stand the chime it plays when you turn it on as well.

Have to agree with this, I love two finger scrolling. Works a zillion times better than using the right edge of the trackpad to scroll like on most Windows notebooks.

I don't like trackpads but if I had to use one I'd want one like on the MacBook. It's even smart enough to let you click it with your other hand even though the entire surface is touch-sensitive.

2010 is here, damn netbooks come with multitouch these days guys.

admittedly, if you dont get a synaptics pad, the experience isnt as nice
/still annoyed my acer has an ALPS pad, synaptics beats the pants off this thing

I don't care that much for OSX, I think its ok. But the real star of the show is the laptop design. IMO, it is the most well thought out laptop I've ever seen. The unibody was released years ago and its still light years ahead of current notebooks.

Here are some of the features that makes a Macbook Pro superior to other notebooks design wise:

Magnetic Latch
Smooth LCD Hinge (One hand One finger to open lid)
Glass trackpad
Multi Touch trackpad with Inertia
CNC Machined Unibody Aluminum
Edge to Edge Glass display
Rubber Screen Gasket that doubles up as a bumper
Microscopic Drilled holes for the sleep/wake light
.95" Thin even with a disc drive
Magsafe power adapter
