Has anyone here had a slump in grades during their college years?

I'm going into my senior year of college right now. My quarterly GPA for the last eleven quarters has gone something like 3.97 - 3.3 - 2.9 - 2.3 - 3.7 - 3.96. My sophomore year in particular was bad, but the last four quarters has been something around 3.7-3.9. Unfortunately, despite the good grades on both sides of the sophomore year, my cumulative GPA is still around a 3.39 (3.43 with some community college credits included). I realize that law schools/grad schools often rely solely on GPA/LSAT/GMAT scores, but I've heard that many of them will place particular importance on the last 90 credits.

Has anyone else had a situation like this, and ended up going into a top-20 law school or grad school? It's somewhat discouraging to examine the odds of schools like UMich., UVA, Columbia, etc.

Heh, on the other hand, I think I'm a bit obsessive compulsive in this regard, as I know plenty of people who've graduated with Cs and done well. *cough* GWB *cough*

Cheers!
Nate

Heh, I won't have time for that until next Spring or summer, probably. But that's what I'm planning on doing as well.

My GPA when I dropped out 2.1
My GPA since returning to school 3.2

Granted my cumulative GPA still stucks but I guess you could call that a slump and turn around

My first semester of Freshman year was a 2.75. But I learned how to work and study, and found something to work for, then transfered to a better school. I started over second semester and haven't made below a 3.5 since then.

I did real well my freshmen year (Dean's list both semesters) and just encountered a big sophomore slump (on academic warning right now). Can't really help you on the law school question, but hearing your story gives me more confidence that I can recover. Thanks!

Damn, I used to think my son was obsessive until I ran into you, Osorum. Quit trying to micro manage your life. It doesn't work and only causes stress to those around you. :Q

your GPA should increase as you go because you figure out the system and get that puppy kicked out of you.

I messed up bad first semester of college (sub 2.0 gpa), managed to pull it above 3.0 before I graduated.

It's called sophomore slump.

After freshman year, you think you have everything under control...and then you learn that you don't.

That's life. I really doubt your sophomore grades will hurt you that much.

No.

Roughly, it went as follows:

Freshman year - GPA = 2.6 on average

Sophomore year - GPA = 3.0 on average

Junior year - GPA = 3.5 on average

Just finished Junior year. Have a 3.11 overall GPA

If you have "it," then you will do well enough on the tests and have enough other positive things going for you that the GPA effect will be diminished. It is what it is, not everyone has a grade slump, just ace the grad. entrance tests and apply to schools at various levels.

I was dropped from school before at cumulative of 1.99.

After that my cumulative was like 3.7

But if you take a total of it all, comes to around 2.9 I think.
It was hard for me. Was in the wrong field I suppose.

Sophomore is usally the hardest year for a college student and that is when grades tend to slump. It's actually termed the "sophomore slump." The parties and novelty of freshman year wear out and then you realize that you actually have to do work. Your circle of friends changes and eating as much as you can at the dining hall has caught up with you.

Sounds about right, except for the partying. I've never really been a partier.
