Has anyone here taken Paxil?

I've been doing some research on the internet about Paxil's side effects/withdrawals and I'm afraid. The psychiatrist only said I'll have stomach upsets.

This is my first prescribed medicine (is that the right term?). I'm physically healthy (had blood, urine, x-ray tests last month) and never had a bad reaction to any drug before.

I'm looking to hear from people who are in/were in a similar situation as myself.

I'm on Paxil now.

As far as side effects they very a lot from person to person but tend to include such things as yawning, nervousness, anxiety, pins and needles sensations, sleeping a lot, sexual side effects (unable to cum quickly, decrease or increase in libido etc). Most of these side effects are felt going on and going off the pill. Once your body has acclimatized to the drug you shouldn't feel to many side effects, except maybe the sexual ones and the sleeping. Remember it takes a good MONTH for the positive effects of Paxil to kick in so if you have been prescribed the drug for a good reason you NEED to stay on it at least that long.

Personally I've found the drug to be quite helpful with my depression and anxiety. Others have had bad experiences and some have had amazingly good expriences, saved their lives etc, most are in the middle.

I am on Paxil CR 25mg myself for OCD. It is good stuff, when I first went on it, I felt like I was about to cry a lot (but I never did) for the first few weeks, but that went away. Other than that, I did not have major side effects other than the dreaming. A side effect of Paxil is vivid dreams, which are not a problem, they aren't mightmares or anything, but it may surprise you.

Oh yeah, and I learned this lesson myself, do not get off it until you have learned enough management techniques to control your OCD. I was on it for a year and decided since I felt so MUCH better, that I could get off it and be "cured." Well, it came right back a few months after I got off it.

For me it was a complete loss of sex drive. I tried going solo for the heck of it, took about 45 minutes without feeling enjoyable at all. Paxil also increased my anxiety fairly significantly, so I switched pretty quickly.

It may not be what you're thinking of, if it's anything like what my medicines (none of which are Paxil) do to me: orgasm happens, but it takes manipulation of whatever muscles I have in that area to make the ejaculate actually come out. Yes, I think a few medicines can improve performance as you are thinking of, but most of the time for most of the people, it's not so fun.

I have worse sexual side effects (I cringe to think about what would happen if I actually did have a sex life), but I'll save you from having to hear about it.

Just a huge, huge, huge, huge warning. Trying to get off any SSRI for most people is a tough, tough task. The withdrawal is insane. Your doctors will probably lie and say that you can get off it no problem. They're lying obviously.

I have OCD and take Lexapro and trying to go off the Lex is a pain.

I highly suggest you go and learn Cognitive Behavorial Therapy to combat the OCD. It works wonders and you can do it without the medication. In the long run you'll thank me! Paxilprogress.org - read all the horror stories and I do mean horror stories. People off Paxil one year later still having severe affects such as dizziness, unable to think straight, depersonalization. Unbelievable!

I have OCD myself. You need to learn CBT in order to combat the thoughts or obsessions that you have. It works wonders man! I learned it on my own so it isn't that hard. It's mainly getting adjusted and facing that fear head on that takes the most effort. Since you're already on Paxil, you should have an easier time learning it and coping with it. Once you learn to facilitate it into your every day life, you should try going off the Paxil and see if the CBT alone can help you.

Yea, I tried a few SSRI's but I really don't want to be caught in that mess. I really could probably use them. They all gave me horrible side effects. Zoloft made me curl into fetal position scared to even go into a different room, I thought something bad was going to happen to me at any second. Like if you imagine someone cowering right before a bear was going to maul you. I felt like that and it took about 36hours to pass. I rode in the car in the fetal position (had to have parents drag me out of the house). To go see the Pdoc.

He said go back to 5mg and and up it again in a week. That was it for me and SSRI's I tried 4-5 and they all just shrug off any bad side effects you have. I don't want something like that in my system, period. Of course I'm vey sensitive to medicine. Some antibiotics give me skin rash. Some painkillers give me itching and put me into a weirdo haze. Like "I think thers bug on me or something" *iitch itch itch*

I Really don't want to talk you out of the meds though. Alot of people swear by them and it can be a really touchy subject. Really I think the way I feel about SSRI's is a tiny minority so yea...

I went to my doctor and told him I was stressed. I had just started a new health insurance plan, and before then, I was smoking the herb to relieve some stress. I told him what I was doing and he said smoking anything is not good for you, but if smoking a "small amount" was helping me out, then so be it.

He then said my other alternatives were engineeered meds like Paxil, and he gave me a sampler. I went home and took a triple dose just to check it out, and WHOA, i tripped out.. I had mild hallucinations, a killer body high, and the dreams I had that night were just out of the world.

Never took another pill of Paxil since. I felt like I was being prescribed a mild form of LSD.

Lex helped me though, a few years ago I pretty much couldn't hold a job due to my OCD. I got on it, learned CBT, implemented it into my life and am fine now. If I had to rate my OCD on a scale from 0 - 10, 0 being the least bothered and 10 being the worst, I'd say it's currently at a 0. Prior to the meds and CBT my OCD was at 10.

So it does help but just know that you probably will have withdrawal affects coming off. What that means is you're going to have to taper extremely slow. Months at a time as opposed to a few weeks then quitting cold turkey.

You guys are talking about obsessive compulsive disorder right? I've never known anyone with OCD that has needed medication for it. Can it really get that bad?

Also next time try to say "unable to ejaculate quickly". The way you said it just sounds so nasty.

i have NOT heard any good things about Paxil, actually the contrary.

You might want to look into a medicine called "effexor" (google).

Ask your doctor. I dont think theres a point in taking paxil ALSO if it helps against the symptoms/OCD....but the sideeffects are just bad.

Ask your doc for samples of effexor and report back !

thats HIDEOUS

A psychatrist tells you taking a hard stuff like paxil/lexa just "will give you upset stomach"...sorry...thats outrageous.

From the known side-effects i already heard people saying things like "felt like a zombie"...."i had no emotions whatsoever"..from Paxil.

Nice how they promote and recommend that stuff still like it were some M&Ms...that psychatrist obviously is a big moron !

I've been on it for 4 yrs now. For OCD, social anxiety disorder, and general anxiety. I've had some really bizarre episodes with this stuff, but I think my body has came to some equilibrium after about 3 years. My main side effect now is my libido is 1/3 as strong as it was, and my emotions are really stable. Sometimes I feel like i'm vulcan now because of the lack of varying emotions, just a sense of apathy. Other side effects I've experienced: Crazy dreams, seeing 'puzzle peices', weight gain and when I was just two weeks into taking it: It hit me one night. I woke up instantly from a deep sleep and felt like my mind was rushing to explosion... then a cold sweat... the morning after my vision was skewed and felt really strange. I say this was the point the stuff 'clicked in'. Then there was a long period of side effects and the gradually tapered off after 3 yrs or so.

why did you take a triple dose? that was really dumb.

these meds are nothing to mess around with. they are brain chemical altering.
