Has anyone here taken the linux+ certification exam?

Just curious whether anyone has taken it, and if so, what did you think? I'm considering getting the cert for a little extra resume padding.

Anyone know anything about it (depth of knowledge needed, whether it is a useful and reputable cert, etc.)?

Not really related to linux+, but is it true that for the A+ exam, you need to pay $145 for each section (hardware and os)? If so, thats rediculous. Is network+ of any use? I'm a high school student essentially in search of some resume padding as well, and a lower level certification could be very useful for college resumes or for part time jobs.

Yeah, that's about what it costs. Anybody who knows much about computers knows the A+ doesn't mean jack, but then again not too many people know much about computers, so... I got it and think it was worth the money.

I'm also curiouis about linux+. I have a feeling it doesn't mean much, but that might not really matter so much... depends on who's making the decision on who to hire.

My thoughts exactly, and as of now, I'm not looking for any sort of a career, I just want to be able to get a part time job at computer renaissance (they buy/sell/repair new and used equipment) and have something to prove that I'm not just an average 16 year old looking for a job. As someone else on these forums said (I can't remember where I read it) Certifications are many times just paying a few hundred dollars for a piece of paper that says you know what you say you know.

Yep, $145 for OS and $145 for Hardware (Core). But most people buy vouchers for these tests, I took both of them for $170 or 180, can't remember.

While A+ doesn't hold much weight, it really shouldn't since its an entry-level cert. Most companies look for three common certs in my expirence; A+, MCSE, and CCNA. Remember that most HR folks might not know what every cert is and what it stands for.

One of the huge pluses of A+ is that it never expires compared to CCNA every 3 years and MS certs whenever they retire them. So as long as you understand that what the A+ is (very entry level) it is a worthwhile cert.

I took it two or three years ago - not sure if it's changed much since then.

All other criteria being equal, any certification will give you an edge over your competition. Every little edge helps. Has it helped me? I don't know. However, any future employers will know that I have at least a passing knowledge of Linux.
