Has anyone here worked on a Palm V/Vx/C3?

Co worker gave me a nearly new Palm V that has a bad battery. I've taken a look at the how-to's on opening this thing up and replacing the battery.

Looks like new batteries are < $20, and since it was free, I've got nothing to lose.

Has anyone done this before? How did it go? How hard was it?

That's what I've looked at. However, I'm looking for some personal info from someone who has done it themselves. Not just directions.

I upgraded my V to a Vx a few years ago.

This is what I did to open it up:

preheat oven to 225
place palm in oven for 10 minutes
pry face off

replace battery, or solder mem chips in or whatever

place palm and it's shell pieces back in oven to soften glue
once glue is soft, spread it to edges to ensure good contact
clamp it up and put back in oven for 10-15 minutes

Notes:
cooking time may vary.
my friend made a shell out of wood to clamp the palm back together. it's needed because you'll never get it as sealed as it was before.
after heating and clamping many times to get it to seal well, i said screw it and just put more glue in there. I forgot what i used exactly, but can find out.

It was cool to do, but the fact that i had to add more glue to get it to seal up sucked.

Now all the "how-tos" I'm reading say that you do not want to heat up the face/digitizer, as it may warp it. Was this a problem when you heated it in the oven?

There was no problem when heating it up. 225*F won't hurt it.

The only thing you'll see is that the screen darkens up when warm. Just let it cool off before using it.

Keep it in for at least 10 minutes, then try prying the face off. You may have to keep it in longer until the glue softens.

I used wood glue to put it back together. In retrospect, that was a dumb move because i don't htink i'll be able to warm it up again to open it up. I needed a quick fix, and wood glue was all we had. Research some glues and pick the one that softens when warm. But, you may not need more glue if can spread the stock glue well and it seals well.

I was actually surprised, as I thought it didn't work at all. But I charged it and she powered on just fine. The charge just doesn't last REAL long. A day, maybe two. Not bad for free tho
