Hey, me and my friends wanna go to NYC but don't want to pay a lot for a hotel. I've heard of these cheap places called hostells. Are they really terrible and not worth it? I just want to stay 1 or 2 days.
They will save you a ton of money. But you need to be comfortable with it. The one I stayed in had bunk beds in large rooms. There were about 8 to 12 people in each room. There is a community bathroom for each sex. The area is not the best. We sat playing poker one night while making bets on how long the hookers on the corner would be gone with each client.
I was with a large group, so we had the room will all 'known' people. It was a cool experience, both times.
there's a youth hostel on 103rd and amsterdam in nyc and it's always frequented by older teens and young 20somethings. they are not bad at all. some people even live there for extended periods of time.
it's right by the college community (columbia university) and about 1 block away from the subway. you're also 9 blocks away from tom's restaurant -- you know, from seinfeld
Hostels are a crapshoot. Check out Hostelworld or a simelar site and read people's reviews of them. I went accross Europe with my girlfriend this summer. SOme of the hostels that cost less were palaces and some that cost more were crapholes.
never stayed in a hostel in the states but while stationed in europe my wife and I stayed in a few. our favorite one was in Holland near Edam. it was like a small KOA where you pitched a tent in the residances front yard. another one we stayed at was near Munchen and it was a lodge. even though we were married we had apart, me in the boys room and her in the girls room. there were bunk beds like you would find in a miltary baracks. the guy above me was Polish and just got out of the Polish Army. we had a great conversation about how strong the Polish army is and that if the cold war went hot how the Polish army alone would capture Germany...
yea right pal, you have had too much potato vodka.
